Martin is way too soft to play on ball. His strengths are running and (well, on his day) kicking. Wing or half-forward don’t have to be positions purely for C graders. He needs to be this team’s Mercuri.
He doesn’t need to be a bull, as he has that spacial awareness of a Pendlebury or Bontempelli when in there.
Is he injured?
Pendlebury and Bontempelli can both take contact though and do their own tackling. Martin is way more timid.
We were at our best last year when he was on the HBF with McGrath. Just two lads running miracles. So, HBF for mine to replace Redman. We’re tall enough, already.
Was his first game still his best?
To be fair, I guess that’s a high bar to reach.
Did you listen to his podcast, where he said he felt almost as if Geelong were like, go on lad, have a field day and basically let him have acres of space all day. They had the game in the bag and he got to have a memory.
Other than kicking more than 5 goals, he’s beaten every other statistical category from that day.
If we were a good side and putting on a clinic, maybe he could get on the loose and kick 5+ again.
I mean yeah of course he’s had more than 27 disposals in a game but it’s the “5 goals & 27 disposals” part that is the impressive thing haha.
No I hadn’t got around to listening to that podcast. Just shows you can get under the guard a bit when you’re unknown and I guess when the opponent are that superior they don’t really care too much cos it’s immaterial to the result.
He’s obviously a player we have done exceedingly well with as an SSP but I guess I can’t help but feel he has more in him than what he’s sort of been generally producing the last 18 months.
Feels like he’s plateaued a touch and his ball use, notwithstanding recognising the fact that he goes for higher risk options, is not at the super high level we thought it might be at.
He played one bad game.
Settle down. He probably had the flu or something. When was the last time all of you did something elite like play in an AFL game when you feel like absolute dog ****
You might trade him, l wouldn’t.
I think he has had a poor year so far
He was very good the week before last against the Eagles
Yeah he was, apart that that i reckon he has been poor
Hasn’t the whole team really being poor?
The year hasn’t been inspiring at all.
I know we expect it but that was some farking game. His efforts for the last Caddy goal were special.
He was probably our best player today.
In the first half when the midfield was very quiet, Nic quite literally drove us forward by winning contest after contest and using the ball well.
That might have just been his second or third best game for the club.
He played predominantly half back tonight and I thought he was farking good. To be honest, I would probably keep him there, with rotations on the wing and forward depending on matchups. We are a different team when he is getting more of the footy.
I still prefer him forward of centre to really take advantage of his skills(38 touches but only 4 score involvements), but there’s no denying he was massive today.
Can’t believe he did it all without a rest too. 100% Gametime.
Phenomenal effort.
Terrific work from Nic today. Ran himself ragged but kept on going.
