Ah you haven’t been told that practice matches are not played at the same intensity as home and away games?
Even allowing for how Hawks were insipid, the final term was played at a fast pace and Walla fatigued in the time he was on.

Agree, if we get a couple of injuires early and need to use the sub he could be a libility. Just get him a few games in the VFL ready for Anzac day

3 weeks in the VFL.
Senior footy the week before Anzac Day (Dees in Adelaide).
Strict ongoing diet high in protein and low in calories.
Profit.

He’s had a taste now. Was jealous of not being out there with Davey while he was sub

Hopefully this gives him the motivation to properly get himself in shape

If pulling up sore from 1 quarter as sub then going to need a fair block of VFL

come on. you don’t have to make things up to suit your narrative. no it wasn’t. Hawthorn also had the lowest pressure rating of the round, they were witches hats

i watched tippa a lot in that quarter, there wasnt much going on. he would have done FAR more work the other games.

either way, he’s gonna play VFL for a few weeks wnd get some fitness

Hawks matched the colours on their jumpers for sure - but I was still a little surprised that Tippa found as much space as he did. Granted he was fresh, and the others weren’t - but the way people were talking about his fitness, I didn’t think that would matter. Thought he’d struggle to get off the chain, but he constantly found space in the forward line.

He clearly has a very good footy brain - understands where to go to get the footy, and I still think he’s enormously powerful, and I love the mindset to chase and tackle that he has when he plays forward. If we had unlimited interchange, I’d play him every week in 8-10 minute bursts then rest for 5. Unfortunately, you need to be more of a stamina than power based athlete these days.

Bottom line for me - Tippa still has significant upside to this team, and I really don’t think his fitness is as far off as people think. I have a sneaky feeling we might see more of him in the AFL than I thought we would originally.

I heard he was more than half gassed just sitting on the bench. (May or may not be true.)

I’d like Walla to run down Daicos on ANZAC day

Both of them?

Yes

Is the plural of Daicos Daici?

Run down or run over?

I’d prefer Maynard personally.

He’s got a sore calf. Didn’t you know?

I was expecting he’d be gassed after 8 mins per Scott, so 15 mins of Tippa inspiration was bliss!

I’ll back WOB ahead of your deluded takes. It’s clear Walla isn’t fit enough to play in the AFL. He played a quarter and he’s got quad soreness and needs a spell. Anyone looking at through a non-emotional lens could see he wasn’t ready.

Perhaps two things can be right. The final term was played at slightly more intensity than a practice match, and Walla still isn’t fit enough and will require some time in the VFL once he is able to.

I ought to enlighten you. I’m not on the Essendon match committee.
So I guess Brad Scott, Gia etc must be, in your words, ā€œdeludedā€?

How do you figure that?

Contrary to what you were telling me before round 1, when saying I was off the mark for contending that he wasn’t ready for 4 quarters at AFL level, they acknowledged as much by playing him for 25 minutes as a sub.

And good on them it was a nice touch and I enjoyed it.

None of us have said he couldn’t get through a quarter without being a liability.
