A huge loss in round 1 is so dispiriting, especially if you’re reasonably optimistic before the season. Reminds me of the Geelong loss in 2022.

I was there too, weird game. They got a few back in the last qtr and 12 yr old me feared the worst

Tbf GWS did make a GF that season but that performance in round 1 is completely unacceptable

Two things stick in my mind from this game.

  1. Dylan Shiel’s first kick for Essendon, when he took the ball out of the middle, streamed forward and then absolutly shanked the kick. It was painfully prophetic for how his career at Essendon would play out.
  2. After the game, Zaha was interviewed and mentioned that the new assistant coach Ben Rutten was trying to implement the Richmond defensive system, so it could take a few weeks to get it right.

Shouted my brother a trip to Sydney to watch this game. We were optimistic after a positive pre season…..that lasted about 3 minutes into the first quarter. It was a long day

I remember this game, but re-watching the highlights it looks like the players hadn’t seen each other for six months, met at the ground and played the game.

Season over at half time in round 1.

Impressive, even for Essington

Had a really good 9 goal win over a half decent Gorth in Round 1.

I was actually excited to see what we could take the the reining champs…

Then the game started.

2008 was weird.

We randomly beat the Klan by 8 goals out of nowhere late in the season.

Beat FC twice.

Lost to a bad mid 00s Richmond twice.

Had a stretch of about 5 games that started on ANZAC Day of 9 goal + losses

We really did see the full Knights experience in the first two games.

One of those wins that sticks with me for some reason. A favourite of mine.

Our president did a job on Heath Shaw that day, while bagging four.

I remember him actually doing the job on Pendlebury, which is even more impressive.

Probably the worst game of Pendlebury’s career and the best of Welsh’s.

I think of the three Anzac Day games from 2008-10 as the epitome of the Knights era.

A couple of painful, humiliating losses sandwiched around an exhilarating and memorable win.

There was a patch in mid-late 2008 where we went something like 6-1 with the only loss being a handful of points to Richmond.

We beat Melbourne in round 18 to sit a game outside the 8.

We then lost our last 4 games of the season. The last 3 pretty decent beltings.
