He’s given more than 13 seasons of outstanding service. Maybe those fans understood that and are mature enough to move past being butt-hurt about last year.
In other words, maybe they’re adults.

It’s actual cuck behaviour.
You make me sick
Kids crying at Marvel, adults giving standing ovations to Merrett. You’ve had a long day Michael. Time for bed
If he stays I’d be more shocked than Hird was to be sitting here.
Jesus this forum is cranky today.
It’s been a long year Stealth. We are worn out.
Release of 24 weeks of so much negative energy.
Don’t need to debate this anymore but I’ll strongly disagree with this sentiment. Anyone who thinks like that is the reason why this club is where it’s at. Weak willed and nice in a cut throat industry doesn’t get you anywhere.
I blame him. I blame him big time.
I blame him 100% for derailing this season before it even started.
He was the ■■■■■■■ Captain!!! That comes with more responsibilities and expectations than it does for anyone else in the team. A different set of rules.
He sickens me.
Genuinely thought his parting gift was to kick that goal winning the game and costing pick 1
The absolute irony of Zach Merrett potentially winning the game in his last game for Essendon and costing us the #1 pick was unreal.
Thank god that’s over.
I am glad that Merrett will be on his way (surely this time).
Good on him for winning 6 Crichton Medals. Maybe could have won 1 or 2 in the 90’s - 00’s teams
I have never thought of Zach as a match winner, but every club needs that high-level, consistent ball-getter who has decent (not great in his case) disposal. It was good to see Zach develop the defensive side of his game in the last 3-4 years, too.
I don’t wish him the best in his future endeavors at all. I just hope we can improve as a club to the point where he may regret his decision.
I trust Massimo is wording up the Hawthorn players about what a change room sook he is.
Looking forward to Hawks fans bemoaning his grubber kicks within the first 4 weeks.

All good mate. I get this view. I don’t agree with it, but I totally get it.
Every home game I’ve been to this year Merrett has got the loudest cheer when they’ve introduced the players on the big screen. Most supporters seem to be prepared to forgive how poorly behaved he was last year, having had regard to what he’s done for the club in the previous 12 years.
You and others can’t do that, and i totally get why. But many supporters disagree with you, and that’s ok too.
Unpopular opinion, and my opinion only, Merrett did everything he could for the club while he was here, and took us as far as he could. At this point he’s unlikely to be part of any Premiership team at Essendon given his age, so him leaving and Essendon receiving picks for him is a win-win. We’ve got a long way to climb and every pick is an opportunity - especially now we’ve ■■■■■■ off Dodoro. He went about it the wrong way last year - absolutely. But Merrett left nothing in the tank.
Thanks Zach. I ultimately hope you don’t see success if it’s Hawthorn, but you did your bit for the club for a long time and were let down over multiple administrations/coaches. You owe us nothing.
I’m sure there is an unpopular opinion thread out there somewhere…
