Sheil has a few good weeks every year, then drops off the cliff again, it’s been happening ever since he arrived back in 2018.
I don’t see Shiel and Harley Reid as related
We have a bunch of salary cap space even with Shiel’s salary on the books. And if we keep him, it would likely be for a huge pay decrease
Have people lost their minds?
If Dylan Shiel wants a leadership role he either finds one as a development coach or in the VFL.
Ffs.
You’re being hysterical.
One more year to Dyls if it eventuates, is not a big deal in many respects.
Nah, respectfully disagree.
This is clear cut. People’s thoughts on this are clouded by his first half last week which, admittedly, was excellent.
We need to begin grooming a half back flanker or draft one.
People who want shiel to stay on are worse than Pol pot.
Whatever the club decides, I hope they wait until the end of the year and take into account more than just a great half against a bottom 4 team.
We have to most past Shiel by end of year
Just to fill in some gaps, his own game was awarded coaches votes in the last 2 games. On top that there’s the stuff that Aceman mentioned above that isn’t always obvious, the stuff that bonds a footy team.
Dyl is pretty handy to have at the club on and off the field and will be very helpful grooming new players.
My word
If Shiel wants to ‘help the kids,’ the best thing he could do is get out of the farkin way so they can play midfield mins.
It’s a tough one. With Parish, Caldwell & Tsatas unavailable, Shiel stepped up and has been one of our best in the midfield the past couple of games, polling coaches votes both times.
I personally wouldn’t be in favour of keeping him for another year but in terms of holding his spot (for the time being), my default stance with team selection is to reward those who are in form and earning their spot.
Be very careful what you say in this thread
Some fair points and I’m not doubting he provides value as a senior figure around the club. Given how professional a trainer he is, I could totally see him in a conditioning/fitness role.
If he’s handy off the field, let’s capitalise on that rather than wasting opportunity.
He’s only competitive for a half in round 5, not sure how his endurance will improve with age
While we have midfield injuries just play him if he’s performing, if we have a full complement of midfielders play him sub. Gotta get him to 100 games.
Has fully cemented his midfield spot now. Was great again tonight.
Yep, playing some really strong footy.
He’s proving the doubters wrong. Hopefully he can keep it up all season.
Serious question,
What do ya’ll think we gain by continuing to play him which means Tsatas and Hobbs arent getting minutes in the middle?
We just beat one of the worst teams of all time by 2 points, and theres people advocating for us to keep playing a 32 year old. Yet if you head to the trade thread, everyone is demanding we hit the draft hard.
I am very confused with Blitz.
