All Things Podcast

I assume the Bomberblitzcast sold out to Spotify? Haven’t seen them in ages…

He’s giving up a $130 million a year advertising deal to be there, so I’d say he might do slightly better than the musicians whose art built that platform.

We had to let Joe go to afford your contract.

Downcast!

Fly cast!

Asking out of ignorance, what features out of a podcast app are desirable other than “playing the podcast”?

For me, it’s automatic download of episodes to subscribed podcasts, resuming where you left off and being able to order oldest to newest, or newest or oldest. Not sure what else you’d want.

Cutting our silent pauses. 1.25/5 speed. General management. Play timers, day I want listen to something for 30 minutes whilst trying to fall asleep. Thank you hardcore history.

Less important to some but very important to me. Aesthetic of the app.

The Apple podcast store offers most of those features. Only ones it doesn’t have are the sort function and the silent pause removals.

You can sort the order…I have to do it all the time for history-type podcasts where I’m catching up.

I’m listening to the History of Rome at the moment and it would be as annoying as hell to move backwards from the Huns or the Vandals to Aeneas and Romulus. You wouldn’t want the thing to go from the murder of Caesar…sorry, spoilers…back to him crossing the Rubicon and before that to Sulla, Catiline, Scipio etc.

Why not?

Overcast also does priority sorting — e.g. you can nominate the podcasts you want to automatically sort up top.

The iOS version does it on a podcast-specific level too.

Who are these people wanting stuff played newest first?

I really enjoy just about anything produced by the BBC. Equally a lot of Radio National stuff is fascinating, and usually educational.
Listened to this one recently from BBC Discovery. It’s about a neuroscientist who has been studying what’s known as ‘the grey zone’. Researching the level of consciousness and awareness of those with brain injuries. Lots to think about, from both a medical and moral perspective.

Podcast Addict which is my current app of choice also does priority sorting which is awesome.

Podcast addict lets you configure which podcasts to automatically download (and which not too). It can add them to the default playlist (or not) and others have said allows various different sorting. And as others have said, playing different speeds, skipping silence, sleep timer, etc.

Basically I have it configured so I don’t need to think about what to listen to. I open the app and hit play. I feel like with Spotify I’m going to need to decide what I want to listen to and then find it and play it? Maybe I’m wrong.

Most apps have a half decent discovery tool built into them as well for finding new podcasts. When I used Spotify for music (4 or 5 years ago) I always found music discoverability was a real problem with the app. Maybe they’ve improved that?

it depends if you get into a podcast that discusses current events you probably want to listen to the newest episodes first before going through the back catalogue.
