Regarding longest yard /mean machine, which one was first? I know there was Longest yard in 60s or 70s with Burt Reynolds, was there also mean machine (Soccer version of it) around that time or just the one with Viney Jones?
Yep, where they play soccer again the guards. Statham as the crazy goalkeeper is very funny. The commentators during the actual game are hilarious

Yeah I think Mean Machine was based on the original Longest Yard, they just changed the sport.
The only other one I can think of that is similar (which I liked too) is Escape to Victory. Based in WWII, made early 80’s, dodgy acting, love it. Stallone as the clueless goal keeper.
Major League set the bar for me
Semi Pro came close, that was actually done really well
Serious ones, I like baseball movies mainly, Bull Durham, The Rookie, For the love of the game (the gam bits) Moneyball
NFL ones I like that most recent Cosner one Draft day (he should really only do sports films) Invincible, The replacement,
Basketball, Coach Carter, Glory Road
I dunno, I think he did neighbours at some point (he’s an actor who’s worked in Australia in the past 30 years… stands to reason) but not for all that long IIRC. You’ve done stage stuff yeah? You may have crossed paths with him.
Actually, the guy I was thinking of was Nathan Philips, who ended up in Snakes on a plane and Wolf Creek.
I did very unsuccessfully audition for Aussie Rules. The role I went for, went to a guy who a friend of mine knew very well, and not for good reasons… Is your cousin Tom by any chance?

I LOVE that movie, always makes me laugh
Semi Pro is not bad (the commentators are the best bit… you jive turkey), but I thought Taledegga Nights was a lot funnier
Three pages into the thread and no mention of The Club.
Despite the Filth being the subject matter, for an Aussie movie from the 70’s I thought it was great.
Graham Kennedy reminded me so much of Allan McAllister as the club prez. Ahead of their time on that movie.
At the time Williamson was a long suffering Filth supporter - I read once that he relocated to Sydney to escape the torture that is the lot of a footy supporter in Melbourne - but the stage version is better, not least because there the Filth didn’t actually win the flag.
The great actor Frank Wilson absolutely killed it in both the movie and the play and Jock’s gloating “he’s been up his mum and his legless sister and he thinks he killed his old man” is one of the great lines.
By the way, do you reckon Woosha might be a bit of a “Rostoff”?

My memory is a little hazy as I haven't seen the movie for possibly over a decade now GRR, but if you're referring to Rostoff as being Jack Thompson's character as the coach, I reckon you're on the money there. That's a great pick up.
Absolute classics from many years ago:
Le Mans starring Steve McQueen
Downhill Skier starring Paul Newman.
They have dated but the action and cinematography is brilliant.

I didn’t like Draft Day.
I know the title gave it away but I wanted it to go for longer than just the one day. That’s what i liked about Moneyball.
Also another glaring problem…
How did the GM get from New York City all the way to Cleveland between two picks in the draft? It would have taken him two draft picks just to get to the airport through that traffic.

Do you mean Downhill Racer with Robert Redford and Gene Hackman made in 1968?
Pretty good, but not a great.
