Nice to see you changing your mind on Scott, Nino.
He’s currently got a role in the Sydney Football Department.
He is enjoying his time in the media where I’m sure his profile has been pretty good. He doesn’t even need to be in the studio anymore.
He retired because he was ‘burned out’ after their grand final loss.
Why would he want to leave the job in Sydney to coach us?
Tasmania approached him and he’s said no.
Melbourne approached him to enter their process and they asked him to do a psych test. He said no, so they looked elsewhere.
I think he’ll be a great fit. But just like other coaches that have won premierships elsewhere, I’m not sure he’ll be as fully invested to see out the cause. If it was after 2 or 3 years of development and we were mid ladder based on youth, I can see him being interested. But we’re 5 years away from challenging if everything goes right. And that’s a big if.
To compare it to a previous Essendon year, I’d say he’d be more likely to want to coach a team like the 2014 Essendon whilst Hird was in Paris. Where a good group of 10 experienced footballers have already had two or three years of playing and growing together.
Nino can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted.
All very good points. If he’s currently being away from the coaching circus then well done to him; its a hard caper. I also agree, that being a premiership coach, he may not be as invested as a coach who is trying to make their name in the business.
I never thought Brad will be a premiership coach with us he was brought in to rebuild the club and help with the turn over the list his job is almost done.
I think Brad will leave the club in a better place then it was when he first started imo
Stop making this up Nino.
- It was very publicly stated that he was brought in to “get more out of the list” - in his first full off-season we went on a shopping spree for the likes of McKay, Gresham and Duursma - he never came in to do a rebuild. He was brought in to win a final and has failed and now is part of a half-arsed, low conviction rebuild.
- It is not the coaches job to “rebuild the club and/or the list”. He is a coach (a terrible one). The remit of rebuilding the club sits with the board and CEO. The remit of rebuilding the list sits with the list manager. Stop crediting Scott with things he simply hasn’t done.
How is it a half arsed rebuild we haven’t traded a first round pick for players since 2019
All those guys he brought in were FA’s and didn’t cost us draft capital.
20 players debuted since 2020 Hawks only have had one in the same time.
The club has been doing nothing but turning over the list and going to the draft. Agree that the rebuild should have started earlier but it’s happening now and that’s all that matters
People complain that we got Brad because we want to get more out of the list well sacking Brad and hiring Longmire is doing that exact same thing.
With a very young list, any replacement Scott needs to be young as well - Hinkley and Longmire are both yesterday’s men and coached a previous generation of footballers.
Not sure age is a barrier to me. Hardwick and Fagan are oldies and inherited very young lists.
I’m split in the middle. This list is crap and is years away from contending even if we nailed our recent picks.
But we need to have a coherent plan from day one. My main criticism of Scott is he wasted too much time early. He’s laid his bed and now he’s got to sleep in it
There is more to a rebuild than all taking your allotted picks. It is half arsed because:
- We have not willingly traded away a single player of value. We had our chance with Merrett and completely shanked it. When players of value have left despite our wish for them to stay (eg Draper and Daniher) we have farked up our chances of getting max value for them.
- Simply debuting a large number of players who are very low probability to make it does not constitute a rebuild - that is just taking wild swings in the dark and hoping something works. Our debut numbers from last year includes Smartt and Lual who are no longer on the list and a few more who no doubt will be cut this year.
- We do not play like a rebuilding team - there is no sustainable game plan which takes some pain with a view to building future success. We play safe and scared football with the number one aim of minimising damage.
- We do not even have the conviction to say the word rebuild - if we can’t admit to doing it, we cannot commit to it fully.
Sam Reid made a career out of not being able to do the basics.
Not wavering in that belief?
I haven’t seen any evidence of that whatsoever…
If Hawks added another first rounder inside 15 to pick 10 they can have Merret.
Why does it matter if the club doesn’t say the world “rebuild” it’s quite obvious to everybody that the club is clearly rebuilding doesn’t need to be spelled out.
When Gerard asked Brad on AFL 360 if the club is doing a rebuild he didn’t deny it
Absolute malarkey
He was brought in to get more out of the existing list
Hiring Longmire is doing that same mistake
As soon as they refused to trade Merrett, it was obvious they’re not serious about a rebuild.
He was contracted with 2 years to go holding a player to their contract he legally signed is not avoiding a rebulding
You lose all rights for a move when you sign a contract
Any of Hinkley or Longmire need to come in as director of coaching, GM of football or similar. Years of usable experience but their shelf lives as a coach are unfortunately done.
Our young team need a young coach that is modern with their thinking and who knows how shattering it was when Clavicular was brutally framemogged by ASU Frat Leader.
No club that is re-building knocks back 3+ picks under 20 for a 30 year old.
Yeah we’ve debuted 20 players since Hawthorn has debuted one and we’re not serious about a rebuild
