At the movies - From the couch

I loved it, great fun

Was Vanishing Point the one that had Nude Girl on Motorcycle on the cast list? That was surely mid-seventies at the latest.

Yes.

But there was a remake in, im going to say ‘96(?).

It’s got some very odd stereotypes. Girls just chilling out naked offering any sexual desire to strangers. Homosexual hitchhikers who turn out to be attempting to kidnap the ‘hero’ of the movie.

The remake is better.

gladiator 2 trailer has dropped.

hope its good- first movie is a favourite of mine.

harry gregson williams is doing the score which gives me hope that there should be an epic score throughout… not sure why they used hip hop music in the trailer… weird

the plot does seem to be very derivative of the first, which may or may not work well. I feel they should have just bit the bullet and called it a remake as opposed to a sequel if the plot is what as described on the internet.

the first script for the sequel which was scrapped seems wild though.

Lol so apparently the original movie had Kid Rock in the trailer. I’d say the rap music is Hollywood trying to do the first movie step for step, even in promotion.

This trailer is way better than the previous one. But you’re right, it looks like a thinly veiled reboot. I’ll likely go see it if the reviews are good enough to warrant the big screen.

what was the previous trailer, i thought this was the first one?

2/3 way through Animal Kingdom, 2010.

9/10

It’s a fantastic movie. Whilst it follows a well known Melbourne crime family, it mostly depicts scenes immediately before and after their crimes, which makes it so engrossing.

Would have to be in the top couple of Australian movies, the acting is superb.

Not weird anymore, just expected unfortunately. “Yeah, yeah, blood in the colosseum…” jesus. Farking stupid, completely took me out of it. Hopefully just trailer trash, handy cheque in the mail for whatever chap penned the genius

It’s like I don’t mind if the music fits the actual movie, but gladiator?

Why not just use the actual score?

It’s very weird, I don’t understand it.

Hollywood, new dynamic, new younger market, can’t rely on Rusty Crowe/Ridley Scott and fascinating old fashioned twisted history. Enter Paul Mescal in short shorts and some billionaire rapper spitting bullshitt.

I have hopes but reckon Ridley’s a spent force and there’s every chance this is more Spartacus Blood on the Sand than Rome

Haven’t watched the original since it was released. Need to go back and revisit.

Mostly fictionalises events. From memory the Ben Mendelson character which was inspired by Dennis Allen died the year before the Walsh Street murders.

Why on earth would they do this?? Is nothing ■■■■■■■ sacred??

Why does a Gladiator movie have a rap song in the trailer…

Trailer looks decent enough, some of the CGI not so much

But the rap song in the trailer was definitively bizarre and took me out of the whole thing

It really doesn’t. It’s basically Denzel in Training Day, if it was set in 946ad.

Denzel from training day, in gladiatorial time…. I’m in!

The trailer was fine, but the original was all all time great movie. The sequel will only disappoint.

True. Waiting so long between sequels has definitely hurt a lot of the excitement for it too

thanks for the heads up re Animal Kingdom. Watched it last night and agree, great movie.

Then got an ‘if you liked this movie, try…’ and ended up watching The Boys (1998). I remember hearing about this movie when it was first released but didn’t get around to seeing it. Wow. Talk about powerful performances. Similar to Animal Kingdom, loosely based on real life events. David Wenham returns to his mother’s house after a year in jail and the story focuses on the rest of the day as he and his brothers go on a drinking spree and details of why he ended up in jail emerge, but there also some forward flashes of the outcomes of that day.
