You ever seen the old Eastwood classic Escape from Alcatraz, Swoods?
Well Shawshank is like a more refined, layered, and satisfying version…if that makes sense.
Very much worth the watch.

There’s a lot of stuff in there that I haven’t seen either, but the first and second Alien movies, and the first and second Terminator movies, are worth looking at. Also Blade Runner (not the sequel).
I just finished watching the Day of the Jackal series on Foxtel, and then last night I was looking at Amazon Prime and up popped the original Day of the Jackal movie to rent for $4.99, so I watched it.
Chalk and cheese. How to make a real suspense movie as opposed to how to pad an old idea out into a glossy but supremely stupid 10 hours or so.
Yep, the Scott film is atmosphere and sheer horror. The realism of the sets, no clinical, comfortable beige spaces, just a functional vessel like an ocean trawler, and the very natural dialogue between the crew set the standard for virtually every claustrophobic thriller since. Cameron’s film is very well done Hollywood action. It’s good scares but you can’t shock like the first one, it was truly alien, not just nemeses in space.
Yep - stupid how most series aim for the 10 episode mark. Fill, fill and fill until we hit the magic 10 number.
Same with a lot of the documentaries. They pad out to 3 or 4 episodes what could have been covered in 1 or 2.
I just watched The Substance. Demi Moore will probably win the Best Actress Oscar because Hollywood loves over the top performances.
Truly weird and pretty horrible film to watch. Basically pure horror. I quite enjoyed it.
Seeing a lot of love for Carry On. For that reason was keen to see it. I thought it was very average at best.
I was more frustrated by the inane script to the spoon-fed plot points to the point my wife I couldn’t help but laugh at moments of pure stupidness and began to outwardly mock the movie for the last 40 minutes.
It’s a shame because I love Jason Bateman and have really enjoyed Taron Egerton in the few things he’s done, a future star.
I understand it’s meant to be a classic mindless action thriller but not braindead. Solid 4 out of 10 at best for mine.
Shawshank and Godfather are widely considered in the top handful of movies of all time. You really got to watch them.
Godfather is about 3hr, so give yourself time. It’s weird, it feels long, but it’s necessary, even tho there’s periods that are slow it’s just perfectly done.
Yes, yes, yes…so many people tell me that…and yet somehow I’ve managed to get by without watching them
Maybe one day…
Barry Lyndon is also considered (by “experts”) to be one of the great movies of all time.
I watched it a few years ago…three plus hours of my life that I will never get back…it was a steaming turd (imo) so I don’t worry too much about what “experts” say when it comes to movies.
Case in point…I’ve already seen several lists of “The Top X Movies of 2024”.
Deadpool and Wolverine didn’t make any of the lists…but a ton of movies I’ve never heard did…and D& V was a great movie imo.
Yeah but the difference is when it comes to The Godfather, generally experts, critics and the average punter all rate it.
And when you watch it back today, it really does hold up, it still feels like you are transported back to their time. Very few movies do that.
If I see it on TV (SBS seems to like airing it) I stop and watch it every single time.
Lasted 10 minutes. AI film
The Carry On movies were never the same after Sid James died.
Have you seen One Flew over the cuckoos nest?
In my opinion that is a masterpiece. Not my favourite movie, but it’s just an amazing movie that has everything. (except there’s a scene where the fake blood is way too fake)
Yes…but way back in high school…I vaguely remember enjoying it.
I don’t agree that it’s considered a great movie. Stanley Kubrick was a great director, but I think Barry Lyndon is considered brilliant for its cinematography (eg the interior night scenes were shot entirely by candle light), but basically a pretty slight story. Dr Strangelove, 2001 and Lolita are better movies.
It is regularly mentioned in lists of top 50/top 100 movies of all time.
its not love, its just a pulpy action flick that wasn’t absolute dog ■■■■
