Tarantino released kill bill vol 1 and vol 2 as a continuous movie. Its a 4 1/2 marathon in the cinema.

Knives Out - the new one

Visually it’s great. Too long. Tried too hard. Too many ‘twists’ that kind of weren’t.

I’m there opening night for any Nolan film

This looks like it’s going to be an absolute epic

I’ll probably check it out, but honestly I’m a bit underwhelmed by the design and costuming choices. It’s all so … drab. And I get that yeah, he’s all trying to make it feel all gritty and down-to-earth and lived-in and so on cos that’s what Nolan always does, but … that’s not what the Greek Islands look like. The colours are brilliant and stark, the blues glitter, and the beaches and rocks are almost pure white in places. And that’s not to mention the historicity of the costuming. There should be polished shining bronzes, and bright reds and whites and yellows, brilliant patterning and art and ornamentation. Dark grimy leathers as visual code for ‘badass’ is a modern conceit. In the ancient and even medieval/renaissance worlds, the objective was splendour. Basically all of history up til about 1820 was a drive for more and more colourful clothing. These guys were peacocks.

It strikes me as a bit lazy and rote, to be honest. I understand that not everything needs to be historically accurate in every detail, but there’s a visually stunning and distinctive film begging to be made, and it’s been passed over because of just fkg lazy and unimaginative and cowardly design choices. Hollywood faux-authenticity trumping much more interesting reality.

Just a reminder of The Return with Ralph Fiennes as Ulysses/Odysseus more a living myth but a broken man. Definitely less Dark Knight/300 look about that one, and quite a good film, one that stayed with me for a bit. Nolan’s film looks like it’s got all the gods and monsters, could be some fun. Never a fan of American accents in these kinds of epics but I suppose it goes way back to the swords and sandals Hollywood stuff. Damon is a strange choice but he’s capable of gravitas. A Greek actor might’ve been good.

I’m glad we’re getting a high budget sword and sandals flick, especially from a talented director and greek mythology is my jam.

The cast killed any enthusiasm I had though, I’ll watch it eventually when it hits streaming.

Eggers would’ve been great.

get ready for stylistic over accurate decision to be made.

my trepidation for this is if nolan gets another sound guy, cos his current guy ■■■■■ up dialogue every time

There was a thought recently that Ithaca wasn’t Odysseus’s Ithaca, but a nearby island.

Of course, the Seppos will wonder why Cornell University doesn’t feature.

There’s an opinion that Ithaca in the myths was really part of Kefalonia, but the weight of opinion is that Ithaca was Ithaca.

And I agree, The Return was pretty good and far less Hollywood-ish than this new thing looks to be. I’ll probably watch it sometime, but I suspect it will be just like every other Hollywood blockbuster of the last 5 years, but with Greek names and swords and sandals.
