I’m not arguing whether that film was good or bad my point is that many directors take some form of poetic license to when it comes to historical films.
There are many examples of this some being
Saving Private Ryan (especially the role of Rangers on Omaha beach)
Braveheart (they didn’t wear kilts amongst many inaccurate views)
Argo (downplayed the role of the Canadians for a more American centric take)
The Last Samurai (heavly romantised the role of the Samurai)
Bonnie and Clyde (showing the characters as more like Robin Hood rather than the ruthless killers and robbing banks where in fact they more like dime store theives)
I’d suggest they all do, and no I didn’t think you were pumping Ridley up - I think some of his output is genius btw - but Napoleon was, apart from some patches of lovely cinematography, utter trash and without virtue of interpretation or poetic licence
Aside from Greedo shot first, here’s some more contradictions from
Movies.
Here’s a clear, controversy-focused list of major Star Wars inconsistencies, grouped by theme. These are the ones that spark the most debate among fans because they clash with earlier canon, character logic, or the rules of the universe.
Force & Lore Inconsistencies
1.
Force Healing
Issue: Rey (and Baby Yoda) can heal fatal wounds.
Why controversial: If this existed, why didn’t Obi-Wan heal Qui-Gon, or Jedi save countless others?
Attempted explanation: Rare ability; drains life force — but never previously established.
2.
Force Ghost Rules
Issue: Originally required special training (Qui-Gon → Yoda → Obi-Wan).
Problem: Anakin appears as a Force ghost despite never learning it.
Later issue: Force ghosts can now interact physically (Yoda calls lightning).
Fan reaction: Feels like the rules keep changing to serve plot needs.
3.
Midichlorians
Issue: Force sensitivity reduced to a biological count.
Why controversial: Undermines the mystical, spiritual nature of the Force.
Status: Still canon, but often quietly ignored.
Character Contradictions
4.
Luke Skywalker’s Personality Shift
OT Luke: Refuses to kill Vader, believes in redemption.
Sequel Luke: Considers murdering Ben Solo in his sleep.
Controversy: Many fans see this as a fundamental betrayal of Luke’s character.
5.
Obi-Wan “From a Certain Point of View”
Issue: Obi-Wan tells Luke Vader killed his father.
Retcon excuse: “From a certain point of view.”
Fan response: Feels like a patch over a continuity error.
6.
Anakin’s Fall to the Dark Side
Problem: His turn is extremely abrupt.
Big question: He slaughters children within days of doubting the Jedi.
Criticism: Execution didn’t match the weight of the transformation.
Technology & Space Logic
7.
Hyperspace Ramming (The Holdo Maneuver)
Issue: A ship destroys a fleet by jumping to hyperspace through it.
Why it breaks things: If this works, space warfare logic collapses.
Weak fix: “It’s a one-in-a-million shot” — despite visual proof.
8.
Fuel Suddenly Matters
Original films: Fuel is never mentioned.
The Last Jedi: Entire plot revolves around running out of fuel.
Fan issue: Introduced too late, inconsistently applied.
9.
Death Star Exhaust Port
Issue: Tiny flaw destroys planet-killer.
Retcon fix (Rogue One): It was deliberate sabotage.
Reception: Mixed — clever fix, but clearly retroactive.
Canon & Retcons
10.
Palpatine’s Return
Issue: “Somehow, Palpatine returned.”
Problems:
Undermines Anakin’s sacrifice.
Major plot point explained outside the films (Fortnite event).
Widely considered: One of the weakest narrative choices in the saga.
11.
The Chosen One Prophecy
Original meaning: Anakin brings balance by destroying the Sith.
Sequel problem: Sith return, Palpatine survives.
Result: Prophecy becomes vague or meaningless.
12.
Lightspeed Skipping
Issue: Jumping rapidly between hyperspace locations inside atmospheres.
Contradiction: Hyperspace was once extremely precise and dangerous.
Reaction: “Looks cool, breaks rules.”
Timeline & Age Issues
13.
Leia Remembering Her Mother
Issue: Leia remembers Padmé.
Problem: Padmé dies minutes after Leia’s birth.
Status: Still unresolved in canon.
14.
Vader Knowing About Leia
Issue: Vader senses Luke is his son.
Question: Why never senses Leia, who is equally Force-sensitive?
Answer: None that fully satisfies fans.
Expanded Universe vs Disney Canon
15.
Legends Reset
Issue: Decades of novels, games, and lore discarded.
Fan anger: Characters like Mara Jade erased.
Irony: Disney later re-uses many Legends ideas anyway.
Tone & Theme Conflicts
16.
Who Is Star Wars For?
OT: Mythic, hopeful.
Prequels: Political tragedy.
Sequels: Meta, subversive, sometimes cynical.
Controversy: Feels like different franchises stitched together.
The Big Fan Divide
Most controversy boils down to this:
Star Wars used to have rules — now it has moments.
I think all of the other ones are valid, but not this one. I think calling Leia equally as force-sensitive as Luke is a massive stretch, ie: wrong.
But even if that were the case, she never uses it until she knows that Luke is alive at the end of Empire, and that…seems like very small use of it.
I’m sure canon will disagree with me, and say that force users can detect latent ability, but I’m happy to believe they can’t.
Vader detects it in Luke (although he doesn’t know it’s Luke) in the dogfight because he’s started his training.
Why doesn’t Darth Vadar detect it in Leia while she’s imprisoned in New Hope? Sadly it was because the full story hadn’t been thought out. Jedi can always detect the force in others that’s how they discover new ones.
Because it’s latent.
She’s not aware of it herself. Nobody was aware of it, or thought it was significant enough to develop in the extended universe, and some of them know who her father is.
Making her being very strong in the force is the mistake, not Vader not knowing about it.
Good point, good point, but what’s the line preceding that?
What I mean is that it’s equally as relevant that Kenobi hasn’t even considered Leia as an option, even if Luke fails (or dies).
I’m okay with Yoda suggesting that Leia could be trained as an absolute Hail Mary.
Again, it’s the suggestion that she’s equally, or even significantly force sensitive that’s completely out of whack with the rest of the saga.
She has a little intuition. That should have been it.
I lasted about 5 minutes. I wasn’t surprised. I’d seen the trailer and heard the line, “Has the course of my life just changed?” Personally I think Ridley’s been past it for years.
Saw Rental Family tonight. Really enjoyed it. It’s about an American actor living in Japan, who gets hired to pretend to be a girls father. Very sweet and heartwarming, and frankly bizarre at the things you can get in Japan
Accidentally saw the Australian premier of Rental Family a few weeks ago. Was a really lovely film, funny, full of heart. I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan and it absolutely nailed the feeling of the place.
