Best place for it, really.

I wonder if the perpetrators are out on bail, or if they’re a repeat offender, like most of the offenders are in this state? Hopefully NSW has things under control, unlike the ā– ā– ā– ā–  of a State government that’s in office here in Victoria.

I was born in Melbourne and proud of it, but Melbourne has a weird obsession of how good it is. I’ve lived in Qld for a long time and love it here, I love going back to Melbourne , I’ve spent a lot of time in Sydney which I like for a short visit , but could never live there.

but melbourne and Melbourne people have a weird obsession of being the best , the best place, better than anywhere else and they like to argue with people about it. no one really cares in other parts where I’ve lived and visited . this is a fantasy that mainly only exists in Melbourne and victorians heads from my obsevation

that’s exactly what someone who lives in an inferior part of the country would say.

This is my experience too, almost exactly. Melbourne deservedly earned a reputation for live music, sports, good coffee and food. That’s great, I guess, but it’s fairly up itself now as a result. Nobody outside of the place really gives a ā– ā– ā– ā–

You haven’t ventured over to the GC thread huh?

Reckon it’s pretty standard with people living in any location to be spruiking for themselves.

My issue with Melbourne is its current paucity of Scott Boland statues.

Fix that and we’ll be hunky dory.

Except the QLDers who keep going on and on and on about it in this thread.

Yeah, I still consider myself a Victorian, strange as it may seem

Interesting discussion about Melbourne. Whenever I visit i don’t feel more/less safe. But as a woman, I don’t feel completely safe no matter the city.

In my experience

  • you tell a Melbournian you’re from Sydney and they have to tell you how much better Melbourne is
  • You tell someone from Sydney that you follow AFL and they have to tell you how much better Rugby League is

No-one from Melbourne actually cares what other think about Melbourne. We have lived all over Australia and overseas, and most places have good and bad.

I found Sandgropers the most parochial and that Bananabenders don’t know anywhere else exists, except for Gold Coast people who hate everywhere else.

This. People’s needs and preferences change over time, too. I’m certainly glad I grew up in Melbourne rather than 70s and 80s Brisbane (or further north, which another thing altogether).

I’ve always found people from Adelaide are really parochial about their city. They seem to follow any SA based side in any sporting code when they play.

It’s a huge myth unless it’s an original SA based team such as in the NBL or our state cricket side.

Football is very much tribal and the majority of supporters put their original clubs first and many despise both our 2 AFL sides for instance. If Port was playing a Vic side in a GF the vast majority of the state would be supporting the Vic side.

I have not lived in MEL for over 20 years, but it is not a weird obsession.

Melbourne has a track record of leading the world in many areas. Its achievements are based on the efforts of its people rather than just being a city which historically had a lot of people with its biggest claim to fame is its nice view of water.

If people outside of Victoria think this is a ā€œfantasyā€ they need to get some education and familiarize themselves with some fkg history of this country. Sadly, reading, especially of Australian history, is disparaged these days.

When you see a person making their way to work during the morning rush get stabbed in broad daylight, that really shook me up because that’s something that could easily happen to me. It’s not late at night, when you would possibly expect something like that to occur. Then you learn the offender is released on bail that same day.

Then there’s the trio teenagers who stabbed someone outside Crown Casino, again released on bail and return to the scene of the crime that same day and brag to reporters about what they did. What? Anyone who tries to brush this off has their head so far up their arse it’s not funny. What are you going to do about it Labor?

I was a police officer. I arrested these POCS and sat there with victims of crime. It’s truly awful.

Then I’d go to court and hear the magistrate give bail or light sentence. The Crimes ACT and Criminal Code were sufficient. As was the sentencing guide.

Magistrates have discretion in sentencing.

I think some are out of touch and the scales of justice tilt towards the offender.

We need a fair and equitable criminal justice system . It needs to represent society expectations. It needs to have some flexibility for those offenders who can be rehabilitated but acknowledge that there are people who cannot be. And never will be, despite best efforts.

As for teenagers, you commit a serious offence, you face adult consequences.

I don’t understand the obsession with the Victorian government. The laws are there. Or do you have specific changes in mind? This a complex issue and ā€œblaming government ā€œ is lazy.
