Australian Policies -- from December 2023

Obviously its better to have harder entry requirements and not let in people with a criminal history.
I wouldn’t know if what Dutton is saying is true though.
anyone can be a potential criminal.

Curious what the post the community said no to was

I don’t think you are more of a racist than the next old Scotch Boy, but sadly in just about every Nation in the World where we have immigrants seeking to enter, much of the dissent and discussion is racist. Some try to frame it as economic, but the underlying ideology becomes personal.

If you look at the vast amounts of Indian Immigrants who have settled in many locations in outer Melbourne suburbia, it has delivered huge economic gains for our State. I find Indian people are seriously industrious, hard-working, well-educated, who want to be part of a community. Just look at the candidates in many council elections and the number of Indian migrant candidates is astounding. Go back to after WW2 when the italians and greeks came in big numbers, and then when the Vietnamese boated in after 1975, and all boosted our economy; same with the current influx from many Asia.

The issue is not immigration, but development of better low cost housing initiatives, like what happened with Housing Commissions and Housing Trusts previously.

I think your charactisation of “the pitfalls of excessive immigration on the current Australian economy” is the wrong way to frame it, as there are only benefits. The fact is that even if there were no new immigrants, it iss the cost of housing that is the problem, and that is driven by the cost of land and materials and the building labour.

In my view paying $300,000 for 475 sq mts of land is expensive and this is a cheaper area. House and land packages range from $650,000 to $750,000, which is out of the reach of many young people.

I was involved with the development of this area and know that it cost less than $40,000 to develop each block. Some-one is making lots of money, and this is where Government needs to takeover.

As I said, we should be able to have the discussion on intake and its impact on infrastructure, services and housing without it resorting to a racism accusation. End of story.

sadly the liberals will use almost every decision the government has to make it do and spin in it into someone adding to cost of living “CRISIS!!!”
the relentless negativity is boring

As a general rule, No one gets into Australia without a visa, unless you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Except for NZ citizens ( who are granted visas at the port of arrival) Airlines that permit passengers on passports other than Australian who travel without a visa bear the cost of returning them. The grant of a tourist visa requires the ticking off of a number of conditions. Anyone arriving on transport that is deemed illegal entry ( IEV) , like boat people, get shipped offshore and are permanently denied residence in Australia. No individuals on the Australian sanctions list would get a visa.
The increase in E visa agreements with a number of countries may mean that the grant of tourist visas is less rigorous, but that is the price for the value of tourism to the economy. No one is suggesting that Australia should have a quota on tourist visas, even taking into account the number of those who enter legally on tourist visas who immediately claim asylum seeker status.
As someone said to Sarah Ferguson in an interview last night, Australia is a lucky country to be surrounded by sea.

Are you willing to let out a few of your rooms in your house to migrants @bigallan to help keep the govt immigrant intake?

I’ve let immigrants stay in spare rooms rent free, including when they are in crisis, for example subject to domestic violence by Australian citizens.
I have no interest in making money from other people’s misery.

When migration levels are politically unsustainable

Slowing immigration rates for a period (not permanently) to enable housing /infrastructure to catchup to a sustainable level and thereby easing housing/rental demand for a period is the policy of both Labor and LNP. The LNP are proposing immigration gets slowed more for a period than Labor but both have similar policy intentions. It’s not racist and if you took a poll I’d say the vast majority of Australians would support this.

Neither Labor or the LNP are stopping immigration it’s slowing it down for a period.

When did i say i could tell by their faces? I was referring to the fact they dont know the history of the region, nor do they know the slogan river to sea, nor the actual river or sea they are talking about. I can keep going if you like… zero to do with what they look like

Are you stating that we have not done that? And that calling it out is being racist?

The ones with a criminal history who have served their sentences, who have been long term detainees with no prospect of another country accepting them. They were released from detention following a High Court ruling, but there are strict conditions applying to them, including in some cases ankle bracelets. There are Australians in the community with comparable criminal histories who are not subject to comparable restrictions ( unless they are on parole).

And most people argue that our justice system is too soft on people with the crimes in mention of rape and murder etc…
Australia being an asylum for those that would get a worse punishment from their home isnt a valid reason to let people stay.

There is a system in place for deportation of non citizens with criminal convictions involving custodial sentences of X years. As I understand it, It works well for around 99% or more in this situation. The extremely few remaining here are the ones that Australia can’t find their country of citizenship to take them. We aren’t letting them stay,
The privilege of Australian citizenship.
The ‘most people’ claim is an opinion.

As I said Davo, sadly it is not possible anywhere in the world to discuss immigration without racism rearing its ugly head.
