I’d like to know if @Bacchusfox has any inside info on this, because it seems like the kind of issue that could be dispelled with a controlled, persistent campaign within about three months.
The Liberals are absolutely shocking at managing the economy. Terrible. Their poster boy, Jackboot Johnnie, presided over the highest interest rates this country has ever seen. between he and Costello they absolutely squandered the proceeds of the mining boom. They failed miserably to reap the benefits of the sale of Telstra, not to mention setting up a position where a private company has effective control over the most important infrastructure project in this nation’s history.
Keating put this country where it is today. Labor governments since have kept it there through, at times, appalling world economic conditions.
I’m so sick of hearing the generally accepted tripe that the Lieberals are better.

In fairness the Libs are great money managers.
They manage very efficiently and effectively to send billions of dollars into the pockets of their mates and various Tax havens

Howard became Prime Minister in March 1996 when the interest rates were 10.5%. 1 year later they were 7.55%. It was in fact Hawke & Keating who presided over the highest interest rates at 17% from June 89 to March 90.
Think he meant as treasurer, but I still think you’re right.

Facts are that generally Labor has a much better record in Government on the economy than LNP.

But it’s not only the LNP which is casual with taxpayer’s money. The Qld Labor government as recently as earlier this year gave The Great Barrier Reef Foundation $3.5m as well. For approaching half a billion dollars combined, you’d expected a brand new reef.

What John Howard did not want to admit then, and still continues to hide, is that when he was the treasurer in the Fraser government the interest rate was as high as 21.4 per cent - in April 1982.

It just makes me laugh that the tofu eating, leftie brigade who preach equality and freedom of speech are the ones to act out in this manner and in general abuse and harass people who have a contrary political view to theirs. As Ace said, regardless of the political party they stand for, you do that to a PM or any MP, you deserve punishment.
Some people do not know history or choose to forget it.
People should also remember that back then when Honest Johnny was the Treasurer (after the Tories were elected with promises/bribes for tax cuts that were promptly dishonoured after the election) he also presided over unemployment levels that were the highest since at least the Depression.
Highest interest rates. Highest unemployment. High inflation…
But, “better economic managers”.

You do realise the interest rates governments pay on debt is not the same as the cash rates that are set by the reserve Bank to help control the economy? Are you suggesting the official cash rates mortgagees pay is somehow less important to the electorate???
