it’s not the same thing at all - him winning flags in the past doesn’t mean he WILL win more
you could argue it’s more likely, or he has a better chance than Rutten to do so - but I’d love to see your solid evidence of him fixing the entire adminstrative department of a footy club, because that’s the baseline to address all our problems
Thats not the same at all. It would be the same if @Drapersmullet was guaranteeing that we would not be successful with Clarkson but thats not what hes doing. Clarkson could be successful or unsuccessful, there are no guarantees either way.
Clarkson is the most innovative and successful coach since Sheedy ……if he wanted to come to Essendon we’d be mad not to move Truck on and grab him. He’d be an amazing person to have at our club
Depends on what version of Clarkson we get. We shouldn’t just assume that we would be getting the best of him. The alternative is potentially Carlton post-Malthouse level of damage.
Still incredibly sceptical about bringing in Clarkson. Any team which picks him up should be. He will cash in hugely on any deal he gets. He will make absolute gravy. Stick around for another 3 years as a coach on 1 mill per year and then i bet he will move on and do private sports management consulting.
Rather than look at the head coach in isolation, we should be looking at every successful team of the last 20 years and analysing the similarities at both broader club (admin) and footy department level.
As much as we all like to oversimplify, the head coach really is only 1 (very important) part of a complex machine.
This is just rubbish. You’re taking one particular case and applying it as a highly likely scenario. Clarkson and Malthouse are completely different individuals with completely different approaches…they are also at very different stages of life.
That was an example of possible outcome, which you have dismissed as easily as I presented it based on assumptions.
Again, stating we should sack a coach mid contract to hire a coach who was good, without considering the less desirable outcome to such an action, is naive.
I think Clarkson is highly questionable at the moment for a number of reasons which it seems to me are being conveniently overlooked in favour of the positives only.
Sorry. I realise my expectations are modest given where the club are at these day but my measure of “success” at the moment is having a team I can trust, who are well drilled and give weekly effort.
Clarkson’s track record (evidence) strongly suggests he’ll have the team playing a structured, competitive brand that “should” bring more than 12 wins a season and “possibly” some finals wins along the way.
Whether that leads to the 17th flag is another matter altogether BUT, building a foundation for “success” is the first consideration needing serious attention.
The other thing that separates Clarkson from Rutten is his mongrel and the (constructive) “fear” he generates in his players, some traits I consider essential to flag winning coaches (opinion).
I’m neither here nor there about it, but it cannot just be “Hey Clako, we heard you want to coach, you can start Monday”. It has to be a proper process.
Does he ■■■■ it in? Probably. But only if he’s committed to the position, something we need to ascertain. Otherwise there is a risk we go further backwards ala Malthouse at Carlton.
I want Clarko, but im just a scrubber who’s only skin in the game is that I’m sick of being shitt, and I see him being bold enough to be able to change things around.
If we were to sack Rutten, then we need to have a proper process. Unfortunately I dont see anyone at our club who would do more than a clayton’s process. Which probably would retain the coach on the basis of winning 3 junk time games in the last month.
It doesnt take a genius to recognise that the game plan is not working, the list management is a shambles, the collective fitness of the group is inadequate, and there is a leadership vacuum on and off field.
I don’t think there is anyone brave enough at the club to put their hands up and say we need external eyes to tell us what we are incapable of seeing, or worse, we see it, but not brave enough to act upon it. There is too much at stake for those on the board and executive - I fear we will continue to meander along in the hope that we get better. I very much doubt that will happen with Rutten as the coach
Our starts to the season have been appalling for years. And I don’t think it’s just fitness issues.
Our ability to do the hard, ‘in and under’ stuff just isn’t up to scratch. Pathetic tackling efforts and Our skills with clean hands and disposal is also a disgrace.
Do we need to have more practice games, before the season starts?
