Ben Rutten - Back to the grindstone (Part 2)

Most likely.

I wouldnt be against Buckley if pendles retires next season he can bring him as an assistant

If he starts next year like this year he won’t last till the half way mark.

That make complete sense to me however this administration will allow him to continue his reign for the whole year, (holding their collective breaths) in the hope he comes good. I REALLY hope I am wrong.

I’m not keen to Clarkson as our head coach.

But he could be handy in the same way Roos was for Goodwin at Melbourne.

Players love him.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel with Rutten, the past 30 games into this young squad is going to take the club forward. There are a lot of young players developing together.

Players genuinely feel they have the backing of the coach and to make mistakes is okay as long as you butter up and help your team. The players past 7 weeks are now, blocking, shepherding, running to create space for a mate, closing space faster and trusting the mate behind or beside him to be there.

@millagurnzie1 this is looking more and more likely

It sure is. I’m honestly surprised. I did not see this turn around coming.

If he can get us playing this way at the start of next season then im back on board

Agree. I can see the potential…but I’m not sure Rutten is the right guy yet

He’s banked 2023 now, the 1st 10-12 rounds of next season probably dictate his career path.

Simon Goodwin had a rocky start and then came good I’m hoping it’s similar with Rutten

I reall hope the club holds off any talks of a contract till after the bye

He survives this year. That’s all it is.
Poor start next year and he’s gone early.
Average start next year and we’re stuck in the middle of the ladder, then we’re sort of not sure what to do.
We start well, extend his contract then a late season collapse (as has happened in the past) would also give us some uncertainty.
Start well and make finals with a terrible loss (as has happened in the past) and we still have some uncertainty.
Anything else and we’re on the right track.

Odds are, he’s not the right guy.

As noted above, in todays game there was some 1%ers happening which is great. The tackling wasn’t there, but the Gold Coast intensity wasn’t there either.
Next week is a good litmus test to see what the team has learned from the past month. Collingwood are a better tackling team and they showed it on the weekend. We need to see if what we’ve learned the last month can actually work against decent defensive intensity.
I have my doubts.

What about the Sydney game?

There will not be a coach in the competition with more pressure on them than Rutten next season.

I am now unfortunately resigned to the fact he is going to be there next year after winning 3 of the last 4 and anticipating a few more wins on the run home. As a result we will miss the boat with a once in a generation coach (Clarkson).

This club is ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  if they offer him (Rutten) an extension any time before September/October 2023. If it gets to that.

He needs to go the full season and prove himself to be the man to get the talent out of this list.

If we start next season the same as this one then it’s time to say goodbye.

Honestly, me either….it’s refreshing

What we need to know is what we absolutely don’t and cannot know
ie are these wins just the upcycle of a mediocre team (and the run of losses was an abnormal down cycle) or have we genuinely found a level and style of football which will take us places?
I don’t rate the pies at all and won’t be convinced of major improvement unless we flog them by 12 goals.
We really need to play the cats and blues and demons to find out if we’re any good because at the moment we’re winning but the opposition is pissweak.

agree

And there shouldn’t be the pressure of him being poached by another club to force Essendon’s hand.

All parties should let the results of 2023 decide what should happen with his contract.
