Ben Rutten - Back to the grindstone (Part 2)

This might be controversial right now but I don’t think sacking Truck is the right lever to pull here. He’s only in his 2nd full year as coach and has inherited most of the list including some perennial underachievers…I’d back him in; get ruthless in the list management department and give him a couple of years with these younger players to see if they can actually be a decent contested ball side.

Bring in Melb storm cosching team. They know stuff all about footy but at least we would tackle

They may not have any choice. If the team just keep losing and playing insipid footy, the coach is done, there isn’t much chance of saving him. The media and fan pressure will be too much and the players will get to the point, like they did at Carlton, where they go to the club and say something.

I want Clarko

If we are so readily forgiving him for this game plan, on what basis do we give him any credit whatsoever for his success at Richmond?

I’m not sure coaching is the problem, but we can’t push the virtues of an assistant coach by excusing him of any responsibility, he has his part to play as much as he has with any success he has had.

I refuse to believe that he has been ■■■■ for 15 years, and just winning the lottery at every team he coaches at.

I totally agree, just saying he needs be measured by both his successes and his failings equally. One can’t be dismissed so easily.

Except that he is responsible for the midfield
Aren’t they firing on all cylinders
Truck isn’t solely responsible for the game plan
It’s a collective of the coaches and footy department

Third in charge of day to days and fourth in charge of defence and we have sucked at defence for four years.

I dont think he would come.

We aren’t getting Clarko guys. He will go to one of the expansion teams. And we aren’t getting Hridy either.

If Truck gets sacked, the candidates would be Cara, who would have the rest of the year to prove himself as the caretaker coach.

Ross Lyon has already said that he is finished coaching. So he is out.

Guys like Buckey, Leon Cameron, etc would be looked at too.

To keep conceding Ave 100 ponts a game is on the coach for allowing it to continuing to happen, without trying something different with the game plan.

Nah, not worshipper. He just took on a hard job at a very dark time for the club, and did it exceptionally well, albeit not perfectly.

I don’t reckon the senior coach was in our top 5 or 10 problems, and I’ve not seen much to change my mind.

It’s really easy to blame Rutten, and I can understand that in a win/loss industry, but I don’t think it’s the problem here. The coaching panel is pretty good - or at least should be in comparison to other clubs.

The midfield group has applied next to no pressure each week (and probably for a number of years), along with their poor forward entries. 2MP is a good target but lower your eyes. And then there is the senior group has also been very average - they basically show no on field leadership each week. I can’t hardly see them keeping any of their team mates accountable to training standards each week. Those failures within core components of a playing group make it tough for any coach.

I accept that Rutten and co need to find a way to get us out of it, but we aren’t where we are as a playing group because of Rutten. Blaming Rutten actually absolves the playing group of any responsibility for what’s happened which has happened for the last 15 years IMO.

Senior playing group are massive part of where we are today. They are non existent, non driven for success, no desire, no heart, no will, no spirit. Also lead by the poorest captain in the AFL who is now pushing back against media and supporters who don’t like him smiling and joking and nor should they.

The younger players will have left by then.

I don’t have an issue with him smiling or joking

I have issues with lots of other things, but that isn’t one of them

I think the younger players are getting frustrated with some of the senior players. Get rid of some of these and they’ll stay.

Probably, but if someone doesn’t do something about this mess, they will be gone.
