Ben Rutten - Back to the grindstone (Part 2)

Interestingly, some NRL coach has resigned - given the push? - with his side 2-9. How many more limp efforts will it take to say to Rutten ‘Time’s up’?

Can Rutton do a Trent Barrett and just bugger off?

Shiel, Smith and Heppell all should be gone this year. Age and injury will also mean Hurley and Tippa will be off our list come year end. Stewart would have to be questionable. Phillips could also go unless we think we need a back up backup ruckman.

If you cut all those players Stringer, Hind, Kelly and Cutler are the only players older than Merrett on the list.

I would keep Phillips, Stewart, Hind & Cutler and play them purely in the VFL, to help the kids over the next few years. They would only play seniors if we have lots of injuries.

They would all be fairly cheap.

Yeah there aren’t many older players left.

would say the list is 3 qrts of the way done

You make a point here that I also want to point out. Rutten is the head coach and of course cops the brunt of the blame but we are really talking about a coaching group AND football operations team. So whatever system has been set up has been worked out between them. Further I just cant believe you have one the 18 best coaching groups in the country fail to see what nuff nuffs like us are banging on about.
There are things happening this year that just DID NOT happen last year. Yep we had the issue of the ball going end to end, maddening I know. But the tackling issue wasn’t there last year. I do really wonder if there has been a change to the playing group that we haven’t taken into account. At the same time it also feels like the coaching group has embarked on some system that they knew would cause this but elected to take the hit for the year. What this is I have no idea.

This is why there is no chance he will get sacked before his contract is up. Will look like another disaster in a long line of them at this ■■■■■■■ circus over the last 20 years

The system and structures are as bad as we’ve seen and what happened to the player buy in? I don’t think they give a ■■■■ anymore tbh which is not good for him. I’m beginning to lose faith

Hardwick reflected he separated himself from players and was focussing on the micro issues in 2016.
It all changed when he bought in with the players and that their on the same team and started taking on their feedback. He focussed on the larger picture and that delving into the micro stuff was unnecessary.

Maybe I have the blinkers on but it seems the players have been Ruttens reason to blame throughout the season and hasn’t put it on himself or protected the players and took the narrative away from the players being the issue when speaking externally. Distancing himself from the players
Not being able to execute the basics from intensity to skills is likely because our players have been to focussed on the micro areas of a game of footy.

Hardwick:
“I was just like, whatever I try, whatever I do, it’s just not happening,” Hardwick said. “And I was changing things and players … and the reality is our game is a relatively simple game. You get the ball and you move it forward. It hasn’t changed in 150 years.
“Unfortunately as coaches sometimes you try to reinvent the wheel.”

How this isn’t completely obvious to every coach in the AFL would completely stagger me. All this football strategy ■■■■ is about 5% of why teams win. Its all about confidence, endeavour and autonomy. When you break it down, majority of the game is 1on1 contests. If you lose those, then you lose the game.

Actually, line in the sand moment falls on Rutten… he’s next move could make or break his career as senior coach. If nothing changes, most likely outcome will have him serve out his contract all the while adding to the misery of yet another deflating, wasted season… and counting.

Thing is, Essendon will point to Melbourne of 3, 4 years ago and try to convince themselves they’re on a similar path.

Problem is, to draw parallels with another clubs progression only masks systemic, cultural problems that plague the club and delays the desperately needed, long overdue change.

And, that period where Melbourne were struggling for wins, well… they were doing a lot right with recruiting, establishing a finals type brand and building a dominant, balanced midfield, e.g. they were aggressive, got a lot of the ball, a lot of i50’s, just struggled to kick winning scores.

Oh, and people apportioning blame on Sheeds for this sh_tshow are way off the mark. Rutten’s handover etc were before his current leadership role. Campbell is THE DRIVER of this malaise. Let’s not lose sight for one moment.

By the way, Parker is a flog. Easy to mock an opponent when you’re leading by plenty. And, to go on like he did… flog.

It’s game plan. Hardwick created a new game plan, he didn’t try and copy an old one, no one wins doing that.

It’s such an Essendon thing to do, “let’s bring a guy in who helped win a flag a couple of years ago!” whilst the rest of the competition is busy evolving and planning their new ones.

This is why we need an external
review. This is why we’re an embarrassment. And make no mistake we are an embarrassment. We’re not just ■■■■, we’re TIMID!

There’s not a single person in the administration that should stay, or the coaching staff. People here say Caracalla should but the reality is they say that because he played for us (he was one of my favorites btw ) but that attitude is why we are where we are.

Honestly how the ■■■■ is anyone that’s been involved with the club any time over the last 19 years not punted the ■■■■ off?
They couldn’t have done a worse job if they tried, literally how ■■■■■■■ embarrassed would you be having that on your CV?

If this was your business and they delivered these results they’d have been gone 5 times over.

I swear the worst thing about this club is the Coterie groups, they’re generous but most of the ■■■■ decisions we’ve made have come from their ”influence”.
Like a Mother in Law to be “helping” to plan a wedding.
Just faaaark off

Why is this post reported? No swear words, and no one being vilified.

Does this mean every time someone talks to someone else about the club and its failures, we can be reported. Bring it on.

Its the only place we are going to be able to look at premiership cups for a very long time.

Can’t say if it is true or not, but it sounds an awful lot like the news on Caracella, the poor bloke has been Essingtonned.

It was a joke.

Bring on more laughs we could do with a damn good laugh.

It’s time to own that there’s no such thong as “Essingtoned”, they people we recruit become who they actually are.

Saying they were Essengtoned is a prime example of how deluded we are; we blame our development over and over but ignore the process as to how they were brought in. We don’t ■■■■ them up, we choose absolute pelicans.

Just look at how deluded we are. We’ve done two internal reviews and despite the fact they haven’t worked, we refuse to do an external for seemingly no good reason ,

They need to ■■■■ right off
