Blitz Probe Cycling

…or just ride 1000km anyway

More signs of fondo fatigue from sponsors and hosting community area.  SHCCC (scody high country cycle challenge - Mt.Buller) cancelled for 2015.

The major highway that falls off the edge of the mountain here (we call it "The Range" just finished 18 months of roadworks and is open again, so cyclists are smashing it. Perfect hot-mix tar all the way down and super wide. It's double lanes but typically you've got slow trucks overtaking slower trucks and a few cars mixed in too. About 10% down for a few km's, then back up the same.

It's 60kmh road limit on the down section but this morning a new KOM was set with someone averaging 80kmh. Someone's gonna end up dead trying to top that. Long, steep segments should be banned on Strava.

Flag the segment as dangerous.

Flagged my ride from this morning, due to GPS issues screwing with Strava. I got a KOM of 14sec, up a short suburban climb/sprint, when previous best was 17s (one second off KOM). I will one day claim that for real, but I know for a fact I didn't do that in 14s today. My top speed of 141kph was a surprise as well!! Hoping Strava can delete both of those stats only, as I did smash a few other segments that seem legit...

A riding buddy suggested issues with my phone, so I have pulled that apart and adjusted the GPS contacts, as per the googles. See how it goes on Friday's ride...

The moral of the story is that I am considering getting a Garimin... In red and black, of course.

I’ve cracked $500, so 1000km it is. Now accepting donations of Cliff products and chocolate Big M for recovery

Any Blitzers tinkering away on their conveyances after trips to Aldi yesterday?

I found a stack of $50 Indoor Trainers that look to be useable - rear wheel holder frame with magnetic resistance roller.  Will keep bike upright and I have a spare rear wheel that I can use rather than wear out my new road wheel and tyres.  Should be good enough for my purposes.

OH CRAP I FORGOT AGAIN

Oh and I have the Aldi wind trainer and it’s okay …

Interesting data comparing various aero positions ...

The only catch is you have to be riding at 45km/hr to get this much benefit.

Abstract

Cycling performance is strongly dependent on aerodynamic drag, of which the majority is attributable to the rider. Previous studies have shown the importance of optimising athlete posture on the bicycle for individual time-trial events. This article identifies that performance in road cycling and draft-legal triathlon can be improved through aerodynamic optimisation of the athlete‘s posture. Nine relevant cycling postures have been studied, and it was found that for road cycling, gripping the hoods with horizontal forearms can reduce the required cyclist power by 13.4%, and for draft-legal triathlon applications, the use of short bar extensions reduced the required power by up to 16.7%. It was also found that lowering the eyes and head increased drag in both drops and triathlon postures. Measurements of the velocity profiles of the wake of a cyclist in four different postures are presented, and it is shown that differences in drag coefficients between postures can be correlated with changes in the wake velocity defect and turbulence intensity distribution.

Crit race Saturday arvo

anyone heard about the revolt cyclo cross series from Giant

they look fun, seriously considering have one for some fun over summer and a solid commuting bike over the winter

Speaking of bikes, a review on CT of a new Specialized bike (diverge) was very interesting.

Would love to take one of these for a spin.

Zerts have got to be the biggest marketing w@nk in all of cycling. Had them on my Spesh and still have nfi what positive effect they actually have.

And they look plain dumb, to boot.

Bit of free time this evening for some stupidity...

First I'm pretty keen on these colours for my kits

But I was thinking about a kit like this on a training ride recently

Oh, and how many do I put you down for G4T?

Like the “Dropped” kit.

Designed this one for my mate's solar business. Nothing flash, but looks alright for a muck about. Would definitely wear.

They all look good.

Def in for the Banana jersey :)

Looking for some bottom bracket expertise.

My BB is the version before the sealed cartridge.  It had been making a bit of scraping sound every now and then.  I took it to LBS about a month ago, they pronounced it fine.  However I later found out they didn't pull it out which I asked them to do.

Anyway I went for ride yesterday and it started making a lot more noise all the time.  I stopped and checked and worked out it was internal and only when I was pedalling. So I kept riding very slowly to the next town.  Someone I ride with was walking on the opposite side of the street he called out that there was a lot of noise, and there was lots of noise - scrapes, clicks, groans all the time.  I was pedalling as slowly and sparingly as possible because it was embarrassing.

Anyway I stopped, got a coffee. Then I took chain off and wound the crank just by itself - it was clicking all the way around and felt like it was rolling unevenly through a tube full of marbles.

Anyway replace BB I thought.  But also thought I probably can't do much more damage by riding slowly 20km back home, and I am going to replace it anyway.

But on way back, still lots of noise, then after about 5km is seemed to get a lot stiffer and pedals stopped even though I was pedalling slowly in a low gear doing about 14km/hr.  Oh no I thought no good if I can't ride back.  So I gave it a bit more effort and it suddenly started spinning very easily with no noise - just like normal.  Then I rode back as though nothing had happened!

When I got home I took chain off again and the cranks spin almost as well as the wheel hubs - no hint of a problem, perhaps a very faint click every 30 degrees if I rotate slowly but otherwise nothing.

So I plan to replace BB myself this week as I can't risk this happening again when I might be much further from home.  But wondering if anyone has any suggestion as to what went on.  I thought one of bearing cups had fallen to bits, but then I can't imagine it fixing itself.  Any suggestions?
