For those judging the cops for not shooting earlier, they did as we as a community have trained and instructed them to do. Victoria Police had a habit of killing people, a lot more people than comparable states. Their standard approach is now to deescalate wherever possible, with lethal force as a last resort. These guys were in a terrible situation and I have a huge amount of respect for them. Just remember, there’s police attacked in similar situations all the time, just without the mass iphone footage for us to judge. It’s a tough job and far more ■■■■ goes down than people realise, a lot of big things happen without the media ever noticing, it gets sorted and life moves on.
Now if they had shot earlier, they would have been charged. If a cop shoots someone without just cause, they are charged and prosecuted. As they should be, killing someone should be taken seriously and should be a last resort only.
As for trolley guy. Good Samaritans are often a liability in an emergency. I’m an emergency responder, I’ve seen the community do amazing things, but so very often it is misdirected or counterproductive. I’ve seen people put themselves in immense danger for very very little reward, risks that a trained person would never even consider. I won’t judge if trolley guy was a help or hinderance, but generally having an element of chaos like that makes things harder for those responding, another person to protect along with your own life. Most of the time the best thing to do is give emergency responders the access and space they need, let them focus on the situation without worrying about spectators.
What you guys don’t realise is that these heros will be doing interviews and run throughs late into the night and probably tomorrow too…
They will have every millisecond of their actions questioned in super slow motion.
Then they will go to Coroners Court and it will go again.
To the point that when they finally get their bravery medals (if they do because it really dosen’t look good to give someone a bravery medal for shooting someone dead…) it will only serve to reopen the mental scars.
I think you’ll find not one person in the thread has said the police did the wrong thing by shooting the guy. It’s probably the most unanimous thread I have ever seen.
The discussion has been more about could they have shot him sooner than they did and the minutia of everything involved with something like this.
I think everyone is incredibly proud of the two policemen.
They would also need to worry about many more things than that.
Like shoe triggers… Israel has the correct mentality, shoot them first. If you do what this guy did and even look like you have a bomb…
Watch you all change your tune when something like this happens only the guys HAS a bomb. It’ll unfortunately happen one day and some brave policers officer will lose their life as a result
I am pleasantly amazed that this happens so rarely. It is so very very easy to cause mass carnage. All it takes is a truck, a car or a trip to Bunnings for supplies. The fact that this isn’t a common occurrence is purely down to our community being made of good people. Despite the terrible event today, the world is generally a good place.
I’m more concerned about the family members of the criminal. They are going to have to live with his death for the rest of their lives. Apparently that matters.
