When they did the first scene with him, and you just saw him up through through the grates, partially obscured… I thought ‘Thats a clever way to get around the fact that Jessie Plemmons isn’t 19 and 70kg anymore.’
But then the next scene is a full body shot of him, and I thought ‘Oh…’
Hahaha I thought the exact same thing. I was like “ok then, I guess I can handle fat Plemmons if it’s through the grates”. An hour later I was like “good grief!”.
Thought Badger was also looking a bit thicker too.
And to continue the discussion, I don’t really see why we should like or feel sorry for Gene at all - he deserves whatever is coming to him.
Jimmy was likeable, Saul was a piece of ■■■■ but certainly had some humanity under all the bluster. Since the Jimmy story ended, I don’t have any reason to feel sorry for Gene - he ain’t Walter White but he’s still an epic fuckup who caused a lot of suffering for those around him.
Both are very similar in the way they are written. The layers we are presented with in both shows are something that only the very best television shows can do. There is so much you would miss if you weren’t looking for it.
The fact Breaking Bad was working with a blank canvas but Better Call Saul had set parameters makes me appreciate it more. Having a relatively known outcome, ie who Saul becomes, but making it riveting viewing is special tv. The way characters and statements from Breaking Bad have been threaded into Better Call Saul is absolutely top notch. I love that some throwaway lines when first meeting Saul in BB formed the key backbone of BCS - , " It wasn’t me, it was Ignacio. He’s the one! " " Lalo didn’t send you?. This is just absolutely amazing writing.
As for a comparison, I have them on a relative par to each other. It’s like having to chose a favourite child.
Has anyone in the BB universe ever actually got away? Jesse sort of did, but only after being a Nazi’s meth slave for a while. Skylar got away with some of Walt’s hidden money. Pretty much everyone else is dead?
Not trying to kill the fun of cheering for Saul, but it doesn’t seem like much of a possibility imo.
At least walter went back to wipe out eh nazi bikers and to resuce Jesse, I guess that is a redemption of sort. But gene / saul, the absolute worst human being who deserves whatever he gets. I think he’ll die in dramtic twist circumstance, Gilligan is the master of unpredictability and linking of story lines. Thats what is great about his style
Aside from the iconic BB pilot, early BCS >>> early BB for sure. The BB endgame though was so brilliant and devastating, I just can’t possibly say that anything can top it - not even this so far mostly phenomenal final season of Saul.
