Anyone getting renos done at the moment?
I have heard that supplies and labour are both much more expensive.
We have plans being drawn up but may have to sit on them awhile.

Damn. That’s not ideal.
You and David Myers can start a support group.
As long as it’s not Daniel Chick
We are planning our knock down rebuild in 3 years after we return from overseas. Our architect told us that if we built now it would cost us an additional $200K then our original costing due to supply chain issues.
Thank you.
That’s a lot. I wonder how long that will last?
Better not be 3 years
Agreed. We were hoping to begin in the next 6 months but maybe wait a bit longer
A cautionary tale :
A neighbour / friend has just had a new split system installed and asked if I was interested in doing the power supply for it.
I wandered down last night to get a look at what will be needed. He mentioned that he’d pulled out an old wall mount air con 20 years ago and “maybe you could use that old cable”. Said cable was visible in the old cut-out brick cavity, they’d never bricked it up, just a removable Masonite panel. Cable standing upright. Stripped, open copper exposed on all of red/black/earth. I put the volt stick on it. As “live” as live could be. I reckon I could see the colour drain from old mates face in real time.
“But, I pulled that cable up yesterday to see where it was. It’s not meant to be live.”
“It never is.”
“I could have been killed?”
“100 percent. I’m surprised that you’re still here, to be honest”. I said it cold.
Not sure I was helping matters. But no point sugar coating these things.
The back story here is that two decades ago they decided to get rid of the old AC. He disconnected it. He did this by pulling the old SERF porcelain holder on the switchboard. And left it pulled. That’s it. No further action taken. No connectors, no jbox, not even any tape. In his mind, it’s dead because the fuse is out.
Fast forward ten years or so and they decide to upgrade the switchboard to circuit breakers. Sparky comes in, new board. Installs a breaker for the circuit labelled oven. Installs a breaker for the circuit labelled AC… Energising that breaker creates a live, uninsulated tail in an accessible wall cavity. Just waiting for the next person to play with it. He removes the Masonite board and puts his hand in to find the cable. A tragedy 20 years in the making.
It’s not on a safety switch. I’ve no idea how he avoided getting hooked up on it. Sheer luck. Even more astonishing, I cannot believe that the bare copper didn’t touch out and go bang in his face. When I saw it, the active was a few millimetres from the earth. And he’d been moving it.
It’ll be fixed up today.
If you don’t know, don’t fck with it.
Jeepers!
I’m looking at it now, scratching my head as to how at a minimum it didn’t splash out and blow the breaker, let alone worse.
What do you think of this solution, @saladin?
Outstanding. Even better if it’s collected dog poo from a walk.
I that’s what’s called a floating Earth. ![]()
Shocking.
Has anyone had any experience with backyard prefab studios/huts? I need more space. Looking for an outdoor electronics workshop as a minimum but might consider something bigger like a granny flat depending on cost.

We are doing a significant renovation/extension.
We don’t like ensuites. The smell, the noise etc. spoken to friends and a builder, they think we’re crazy to not have one. It’ll end up being 4 bedroom 2 bathroom.
I get it, resale value might be one reason, but what do you guys think of not having an ensuite?
Never had one except when I go to a fancy hotel.
You definitely want one of you’re thinking of selling at some point or ageing.
I’ve just plastered for the first time in years and it’s a profession for a reason.
You’re mental.
Are you able to have it designed and built as a separate bathroom, but next to the bedroom, and have the framing done so that future owners (future you, once you’ve come to your senses) can knock the door straight through?
Or even put the framing and door to the bedroom in now, and just not use it.
For our knock down rebuild we plan on having a toilet near our bedroom but it won’t be an ensuite as such.
Similar dislikes as you. Plus our guest room is on the same floor so wanted a bathroom thry could use without the awkwardness of an ensuite or adding an unnecessary bathroom.
We don’t give a ■■■■ about resale its MrHeffs dream house so in for a long haul (fingers crossed).
