John Coates/NRL hitjob
The opening ceremony, some BIG CHUNGUSâ lifting ridiculous weights, the closing ceremony. Everything else cancelled.
Blitz review saves QLD several billion dollars. Informs them of Godzilla risks.
Big public flame where anyone can come and bbq stuff.
First coal / charcoal flames!
Olympic mascot is cucumbers.
Cheap. Healthy. Supports Aussie farmers.
Wins all round.
Miles is about to get wiped out of office anyway. This latest call doesnât make sense. The government is a complete mess in QLD.
What this means for AFL / Lions / Cricket beyond this decade who knows. One things for certain and that is QLD sporting infrastructure for a city like Brisbane will be an embarrassment. Interesting to see what happens next.
A lot of it seems to be is that the Minister in charge, the brilliantly named Grace Grace, is the local member whose district covers Victoria Park and is under threat from the Greens at the upcoming election has chosen self preservation over the long-term interest
Politically it would be smart for the opposition LNP to be quiet and if anything goes wrong in the future they can just say âDonât blame us, it was the ALPâs faultâ
I think the oppo were against Victoria Park too. Itâs obviously political. However AFL and Cricket have been shafted, especially given all the AFL support in SEQ.
100 percent, itâs disgraceful. Coates is an NRL man, no doubt vâlandyâs the peice of â â â â was in his ear about the afl getting a new stadium, i know beattie the nrl commissioner was against it and pushing an agenda.
The funny thing is, the proposal with zero legacy for the state comes out at 3.6 billion compared to the new stadium at Victoria park 3.4 billion .
Politics in Australia is stuffed when you see decisions like this being made outta self interest.
Shades of the FIFA technical committee recommending against Qatar hosting the WC, but thenâŚ
QLD government did to that review what Essendon should have done to the Switkowski Report.
Politics is always about self interest, that is the essence of democracy
I mean Miles has done what he thinks is best for himself to get re-elected, as opposed to whatâs best for the state. I know itâs always been a bit like that, but with the clickbait generation, itâs become much worse. Anything that is long term planning that helps the state, country etc long term, is even less of a priority with governments now.
Very hard to longterm plan when you have such a short term. Even four years is not that long to get plans for the next 20 years moving.
Unless you are a very hard person like Dan Andrews, and even that comes at huge personal cost.
We know this is a retrograde decision, a shocker with no vision, strategic horizon or legacy thinking. The government is going down faster than the Titanic. But the opposition is eerily quiet on its position and what it stands for here. And even if / when Miles is flushed down the funny, whether anything can be done in 6 months to alter this decision.
Itâs a mess and the city of Brisbane is at risk of squandering a once in a lifetime opportunity to deliver a blueprint for the city on the back of a successful Olympics delivery.
Not really seeing the AFL/NRL nexus with these stadium decisions. Clearly Iâm missing something. Is the implication that the proposed (now scrapped) new stadium would be available to the AFL post Olympics?
Yes the new proposed stadium was supposed to replace the then demolished Gabba to become home of AFL & Cricket
same. thereâs no immediately obvious benefit to a new stadium at victoria park. what would go there post olympics that isnât already done at suncorp/gabba? unless the long term was to fk off the gabba completely.
doing up a venue that already gets consistent use seems to be the way to go in terms of financial sustainability
most sports media just want to see shiny new things, theyâre absolutely clueless about infrastructure beyond that
-edit- re-read the article bullwinkle posted. seems fkng off the gabba was the idea
-edit2- and after a google maps scan iâve just realised how close ballymore stadium is to victoria park. just redo that if you really want a shiny new thing
victoria park a better long-term solution for a sports precinct youâd think
is going to be the field hockey stadium in 2032
OK, makes much more sense. Didnât fully appreciate that Coates (who is clearly calling the shots) is an NRL man. No doubt Vâlandys is one of his best pals. Those two together would sell their grandmothers before giving an advantage to the AFL.
NRL politics doesnât tend to penetrate beyond the Murray.
