Surprise surprise, Suncorp is getting a 1 billion dollar redevelopment, for 6 hours of events at the opening and closing ceremony. Which actually takes the cost of the 3 stadiums revamp to over the 3.4 billion price of the proposed new 50k Olympic, cricket, afl stadium. For basically no legacy.
I knew the nrl were involved behind the scenes though, then just tonight i read Kate Jones is great mates with premier Miles and has backed his decision, the same Kate Jones that just a few wks ago was anointed by Peter Vlandyâs as his sucessor as NRL chairman. He gave her absolutely glowing praise.
The journalist who broke the possible Brisbane 2032 cancellation story was interviewed on Brisbane radio this morning and clearly stated his story was accurate and has evidence to back it up that the State Government and the IOC have been in touch over possible cancellation options. He jokingly said âyou can either believe me or believe a Premier who was forced to apologise to parliament for lyingâ. He also stated that he was told if the games do get canned, money already allocated for stadia would be spent. An upgrade of the Gabba to extend itâs life marginally, a minor upgrade of Suncorp and the building of proposed indoor community facilities would be funded out of the monies already allocated for the games. Brisbane Arena however would be scrapped and would in the future rely on private or Federal Government funding if it is ever built. When asked what odds would he give of the games being held in 2032? âLess than 50/50 at this pointâ
so desperate . months ago the only narrative was how much of a waste of money rebuilding the gabba was, and now just like that, they all whinge about no legacy . And now the athletes are weighing in complaining about the politics of it all, whoâs politics ? the LNP are the only ones playing politics with this with their mates in the media are firmly in tow.
There has been a huge change in perception regarding the commonwealth and Olympic games. As a youngster in the 80s the games were everything. It was the pinnacle of sport and countries jumped through any hurdles required to host.
A the height of the games this basically allowed governments to spend limitless taxpayer dollars as hosting was a seen as a privilege, very few battered an eyelid.
Fast forward 2024 and the games has lost its significance. Hosting rights are going to the last country still interested, dare I say it is nearly seen as an inconvenience. From the Athens games onwards, decaying facilities not touched after 2 weeks of competitionsâŚcountries started to wake up.
The population have become wiser and want their monies spent on more important issues, housing, cost of living, tax breaks, education, hospitals etc. 4 billion dollars!!! Yes there is some residual benefits of hosting (re purposed stadiums) but in general the cost is so prohibitive its just not feasible anymore.
The question is why did it take both Vic and QLD governments this long to realise! Living in regional Vic, I am glad the comm games were canned. Initially new facilities, pools, stadiums etc were planned but then cheaper options were preferredâŚTemporary facilities, athletes accom that will likely turn into ghettosâŚthere was very little benefit in the long term.
Brissy needs a new stadium or at the very least an upgraded GABBA.
landscape has changed on things like Olympics . people struggling to pay mortgages donât like to see governments spending billions on a 2 week sporting event while they canât pay for groceries . government is in a no win position . will be interesting to see the media position when the government changes in October in Qld . Iâll bet any money now itâs more supportive with very little actual change to the plans. thatâs the way it is and will always be .
I agree. Thatâs 6 months down track and given time is an issue, theyâre likely hamstrung to a large extent on changing course again. The whole thing has been shambolic from go to woeâŚ
thereâs all sorts of issues around the staging of them which are indisputable. but when they are actually happening the vast majority of people go coco bananas
and why is that? because palashay was going to rebuild the gabba? isnât that what they are saying should be done now? or build an even more expensive satiduun ? so what is the actual issue? what should have been done? and what exactly has the government done wrong ? it seems to me, that whatever they have tried to do, itâs been labelled as a shambles . and the strangely the people who call it a shambles donât seem to be putting up any alternate ideas other than critisism .
what would you call that?
The original plan in the bid documents was to build a new stadium at Albion Park, and the QLD government even went as far as buying the land from the trotting club and relocate them to the backblocks in between Brisbane & the Gold Coast
But then for reasons still unknown, Palachook without telling the IOC, the Brisbane Council or anybody else came up with the Gabba rebuild plan and the â â â â hit the fan when costs exploded
The new premier asked for an independent report, got the results, threw it in the bin and chose a more expensive option than all other proposals, that has no legacy for the state, except for his rugby league mates. Wally Lewis was even at the announcement ffs. It stops the afl getting a new oval stadium though, so thatâs most important to them and big Broncos fan miles.
I also donât get how an AFL fan could not want a new stadium for our sport? It will turbo charge the growth in Brisbane, which is already going along well since 2020. Itâs why the nrl are swinging their â â â â around in the background through their west tigers mate John Coates and former qld labor politicians and NRL commissioners in Peter beattie and Kate Jones.
The final landing position fails to deliver a post games legacy for the city, thatâs the largest criticism. No rail or transport outcome. Squandered an opportunity to deliver Brisbane a world class oval stadium as a legacy for future sporting and entertainment opportunities, ADL, Cricket etc.
Moreover, makeshift upgrades to GABBA, Suncorp, investing big into a white elephant venue with no future beyond 2032 indicates waste and missed opportunity.
Constant dithering in decision making and a lack of cohesion and leadership hallmarks of the whole mismanagement of this by the government. Itâs been a mess of its own making.
so your are saying the original idea that everyone complained about was correct or better? so why where the outcries so loud? can you imagine the outcry of they said the gabba would be no longer and a new stadium was going to be built instead ? of course rail and transport would have been part of the deal and eventual plans. they are doing cross river rail for example , as huge project and they already have a pretty decent bus network ect around brisbane .
to me most of thos is political whinging for the sake of it leading up to the election, no decision was ever possibly going to be accepted. 100% pure politics
The lions being kicked out of Brisbane for 5 years to rebuild the gabba, or stay in Brisbane but pay for their replacement venue RNA would have cost the club hundreds of millions in lost revenue, fans and any proper presence in Brisbane. It would have undone all their work over the past 30 years to build the club and afl in Australiaâs third largest city. That was the worst of all the proposals. The public didnât like the school being demolished, the cost blowout and demolishing something and building something with only 8k more seats on the exact same site.
The Victoria park proposal was perfect. The lions arenât displaced are all, then move into a brand spanking new stadium after the games and the city isnât embarrassed on the world stage and can attract events and have a tier 1 stadium thereafter.
