The whole thing is political, that’s true. Either way though, the government has mishandled this all the way along and that is unarguable.
The government chased the Olympics and is in a bind as to how it will deliver it. It’s the governments responsibility to have created a workable Games bid and vision for QLD but it has failed to do so. Whatever the correct and viable plan is, it’s the governments responsibility to have planned correctly with a strategic lense and legacy beyond 2032 in mind.
Why hasn’t the government chased private equity investment to support its spend around creating legacy multipurpose event centres? Listen to Eddie Mac Guire talk about this with respect to how we should be thinking for the next MCG redevelopment. MCG is in effect a 50 floor building, it should be used everyday for various uses beyond footy / cricket. Eg. Medical facility including pathology, radiology and consulting suites, a 4-5 star hotel within, function venues, ballrooms, education hubs for universities. All these concepts could’ve generated vast outside equity investment and a 365 day income stream to make these big investments deliver ongoing returns for decades. That’s the opportunity being missed, frankly neglected in a political exercise that’s shortsighted with the trendy narrative of ‘cost of living crisis’ as the convenient excuse for a cluster f…k of its own creation and delivery.
as a person who grew up on Vic and has lived in brisbane for over 20 years ,brisbane punches well above its weight and I’m sure they will deliver a great Olympic games once the political point scoring stops which I suspect won’t happen till after the LNP gets back in.
they should be careful what they wish for.
this won’t be easy in a cost of living we have now
this could well be another one term wonder like Campbell newman.
they don’t seem to have many intelligent spokespeople on anything that isn’t just shitcanning the incumbent .
it won’t be too much longer before they’ll have to fix all these so called crisis they have manufactured and nurtured
the redevelopment of adelaide oval and the new perth stadium worked to “turbo charge” attendance in those cities because they replaced venues that were in backwater suburbs with ones that were far more accessible
meanwhile the gabba is already in an inner suburb of brisbane. a new stadium in a different inner suburb won’t do sht
unless there is concrete cancer or other structural issues with the gabba , no need to bulldoze anything .
what they are doing now is better bang for dollar. they get 2 iconic stadiums and others refurbished , they will end up modifying the transport network . that’s a legacy .
to suggest that only a new stadium is a legacy is utter nonsense and pure politics
A 2018 report into the Gabba showed the beginning of “concrete cancer” and 6 years later obviously worse now which is why it needs $1 billion spent on it just to get it up to modern day safety code
That Quirk dude also said that the entire roof needs to be replaced, however they can’t just replace the fabric, modern code says the entire pylons, girders, support structures also need to be replaced
A new stadium boosts attendance significantly no matter where it’s built. Sydney football stadium and Parramatta stadium are two recent examples, i bet Geelong get better attendances too now they have a better stadium, it’s simply fact and one of the main reasons clubs, governments around the world build new stadia to replace the old, often on the same site.
The lions have had 8 sellouts since last year, a new stadium will give huge growth potential for their club and the sport in general in Brisbane.
ok so the first proposition of bulldozing was correct then ? I’m confused now.
or should we build the new one then bulldoze the gabba later . geez that would have gone down well
Build a 50k stadium at Victoria Park for the Olympics, after the Olympics rip out the athletics track and reconfigure the new stadium with 55k seats and Lions/Cricket move in 2033. Gabba then gets bulldozed end of 2032/33 cricket season
$500 million cost to keep the Gabba operational until 2032 or $1 billion cost just to get it to safety standard to operate beyond that date (with no additional improvements to anything else)
Of course it’s a sellout. Queensland sports fans are the biggest front runners in Australia and why the AFL need to continually prop them up. First lean year the Lions have again they will get 10k per game again. They only turn up when they are winning
I don’t think the northern clubs will ever be down the bottom long term again anyway, their academies basically ensure they won’t drop down the ladder for long. For the lions, the way participation has sky rocketed in Queensland, they’ll always be competitive. Look at their women’s team built off all Queenslanders.
