Murray Weideman 85 passed away
Had a liking for knocking Jack Clarke into next week.
It was his birthday today.
Actually born on Feb 16 , Yaco55
Why do I associate him with Arlene Andrewartha?
Blowing out 85 candles would put a strain on the lungs.
I was out by one day - Born on 16th Feb, died on 17th Feb and reported on 18th Feb - At least he ticked off one more year.
Michael Gudinski, he was 68
He shaped Australian rock music
Incredibly sad, he has done so much for Australian music
Whoa, shock and sad. A true leviathan of Australian music
Shitt!
This is a real shock. Had been working so hard for live music in this Covid world too.
I still remember vividly the late Crowded House drummer Paul Hester on the brilliant Martin Molloy radio show in the 90âs giving out Gudinskiâs home phone number live on air encouraging any potential new bands to give him a call.
Entertaining radio, think he had to get his number changed though.
Never got ahead of himself either, or forgot what it was like to be on the bottom end of the scenes food chain.
In the early days of my music existence, Premier Artists became our booking agent and we were playing on a showcase show for Beat Magazine at the Prince of Wales, Mick was there and was watching us play, i didnt think he even knew who we were, he was so far up the food chain and we were being booked by his company and had been handed on to one of the new guys. Our show ends and we are packing down to get our stuff off the stage for the next band to get on and i start trying to lift my amp stack off the stage and it suddenly gets a lot lighter and i look up and there is Mick hanging onto one end of it helping me get it into the green room, he said, âyou kids are great, weâll look after youâ
lâll never forget that.
He once said something to me that changed my career.
He was always positive and full of energy. I have a lot to thank him for as do many.
Lots at:
All these years on here Benfti, never asked you- what band,(s) were you in?
I feel like this massive celebrity death last week should have had a mention. They even caught the death on video.
RIP Michael Gudinski.
He left a huge, huge mark on the Australian music scene. Probably the biggest ever. That much is indisputable. Also not in doubt is that he gave so, so many indie acts (especially in the 80âs) a chance at the big-time. So, so many of them came away happy for having had the opportunity, but not-so-thrilled with the actual reality of the experience.
As was regularly the case with Virgin Records (the English equivalent of Mushroom), as long as the main guy (Gudinski or Branson, as the case may be) was directly involved - with their inexhaustible wells of passion - things were fine. The minute you were handballed off to other parties to attend to your interests though- folks with rather less passion, absolutely no feel for music or art, but a healthy appetite for $$$ and $$$ only- is where the issues generally began.
If only there was a Gudinski or two at every level of record labels (instead of ponytailed peacocks in shiny suits), perhaps the music industry wouldnât be as farked as it isâŚ
Glenn A Baker told a funny story this morning about about M Gudinski. Baker was manager of Olâ 55 at the time and was trying to extract more money out of Gudinski to finish recording (I want a) Rockinâ Christmas. Gudinski was putting up a strong resistance then suddenly burst out laughing. Baker, a little surprised at Gudinskiâs response asked, âwhatâs so funny?â to which Gudinski replied âfancy a Hungarian Jew arguing over a Christmas record?â. Baker got the extra money and the song was a hit.
I donât believe in karma or an afterlife but only the really fortunate get to go out in bed. From all the glowing tributes coming from around the world today, sounds like he really was as good a guy as theyâre saying.
Hmm, he did a lot, and was majorly influential in Aus Music for sure, but Ted Albert Vanda & Young etc might take umbrage at that âŚ
