Watched a truckload of stuff on Hank Aaron today.
Guy was an absolute legend.
Racism sucks.
Was married 8 times in his life.
He certainly lived.
I am watching CNN report of his death now, so sad that he he had to bury 2 of his children last year.
RIP Larry King. Sad to hear the news. I really enjoyed his interview style and I’m very envious of the big names he met over the years. He had what I’d consider a dream career.
Died from Covid apparently, but had every comorbidity you could imagine.
The guy who beat Babe Ruth’s home run record died yesterday. His record was eventually beaten by Barry Bonds but this is clouded by Bonds’ testing positive to PHD’s.
Hank Aaron was (reportedly) the only person Muhammad Ali considered as great as himself.
I hadn’t heard about Aaron until today and that’s how he liked it. No attention, no fuss. He just wanted to be a good team mate.
I learned of him the same way I learn all of my American facts. Cartoons.
Thanks, Sandra.
Worth noting also that Roger Maris, who was white, also had death threats when he was challenging the Babe’s single season record of 60 homers.
But the crap dealt out to Hank Aaron was at another level…and he was about 15 years later than Maris.
He was frequently front and centre during the Braves’ playoff run this last season so his death comes as a surprise.
10 baseball hall of famers have died in the last 12 months; something like 12% of all living members.
Two of my dad’s all time favourite players are among them (Lou Brock and Bob Gibson).
How many of them Covid related?
I think a lot of them were cancer, actually. I know both Cardinals had it.
Does Hank Aaron count?
like a cat
Wow, it’s like a party in my mouth, and everyone’s invited.
(Apparently he needed like 50 takes to get that line right)
Cloris Leachman, gone at 94.
Great TV actress, (Mary Tyler Moore show, Malcolm in the Middle), but greater in Movies.
Won an academy award for The last Picture show, but was my favorite in two of Mel Brooks comedies:
-Young Frankenstein
-High Anxiety
Cicely Tyson, African American actress noted for playing strong resilient characters, gone at 96.
Seemed to pop up regularly in TV series/miniseries in the 60’s/70’s/80’s.
Must say, not a great week to be a female lead actress in your 90’s…
