RIP REM
Nice
I really need to declutter.
What an interesting mix of songs. I wonder if the selection committee had any idea about the story behind Puff?

You mean the myth that it’s about drugs? Snopes and others, including the bloke who wrote the song, say it is not.
The final verse of Puff always left me feeling very sad.
I grew up with the Seekers also. I have very fond memories of my dad teaching me to play Morningtown Ride on the guitar so I could perform it for our Grade 6 concert. I’m pretty sure I was terrible. While I wasn’t a huge Seekers’ fan, Judith’s voice was so pure and true. Their big hit songs are on my playlist today.
Ahh, another urban myth debunked. Can’t believe anything these days.
As to her voice, pure as a perfect bell, despite a chronic lung condition. I think of that film Andre Rublev and his efforts to perfect a bell with the purest resonance.
Fortunately Mr Fox, that’s just your opinion and you’re welcome to it. The talent of those other “three spuds” would no doubt pale in comparison to your lofty skills. Forgetting for a moment, their brilliant harmonising and folk skills - the rest of Australia and indeed overseas, recognised them for what they are - fantastic musicians.
I have mixed emotions about the news of J Durham’s demise. On the one hand, you can’t but help respect the numbers. They were a big deal but on the other, being forced as a kid to listen to The Seekers, Trini Lopez and Neil Sedaka on loop because the radio didn’t work in our Hilman Hunter triggers a near hysterical twitching response that dulls any empathy I have towards her recent passing.
Ha, we also had a Hilman Hunter. No tape deck, but the radio worked.
Parents had maybe a dozen records, if that, which I can’t remember them ever playing. The nearest thing to pop/rock, was a Seekers album. Otherwise it was Peter and the Wolf with Peter Ustinov. As a 7-10yo in the mid-late 70s, there was only so many times I could play my own few albums, being Living in the 70s, Ego, Spirits Having Flown and, later, Bat Out of Hell. My younger sister had an Abba record, Arrival I think… but I reckoned they weren’t cool. So, the Seekers got a run occasionally just because it was there. For some reason I remember them as having 2 female singers - maybe that’s a credit to Judith, though I didn’t have my head around the concept of harmonies at all :-).
Yep, we had the Seekers album as well as Peter and the Wolf too.
I think people need to remember that whether or not they liked her music is somewhat irrelevant at this time. It would be nice to keep her tributes positive.
She achieved a lot, was admired by many and overcame much adversity.
The best of all those is Peter and the Wolf. It’s for kids, but it’s a delight for adults as well.
Love love Puff the Magic Dragon.
Like you the last verse made me sad too. Poor Puff.
The only “pop” records my parents have to this very day are Please Please Me, With The Beatles, The Essential Beatles (a compilation album) and a 7" single of Peter, Paul & Mary doing Puff The Magic Dragon on one side and Blowin’ In The Wind on the other.
All got a regular run when I was a real young fella.
RIP Olivia Newton John. Not a great week for Aussie songstresses.
Not the way I wanted to start today. Or any day.
Oh ■■■■.
Oh no!! Not our Livvy now?
73 is still quite young.
This saddens me as she was my childhood crush and was everywhere when I was growing up.
Her voice was unique and you instantly could pick it whenever a song you heard was unfamiliar but she sang on it. I love hearing it on Hammerhead by James Reyne.
What a beautiful soul she was too.
RIP Livvy.
