Cricket Part III

I’m picking you as a Virat Kohli type. Just not as good.

Looks like Maxwell might actually get his chance here with the top order faltering

Matt wade anywhere to be seen today

I saw him at Centrelink, he was complaining he had to wait in line and thought he should have been picked first.

Did he wade through the line

Well done Smarsh on your 50, well played.

I may not want him for tests but as an ODI player he goes okay.

Hope Maxwell is focusing on the game like he’s supposed to.

Maxwell has opened once, 51* off 35 balls. I a game against the Windies, after Starc did a number on them. His opening record in t20 cricket is good. Maxwell opening would be a gamble, but with having Finch down the order you wouldn’t lose much in the final 10 overs and you gain someone who bats with a little more responsibility when the side is in trouble.

We bat far to slowly in the first PP for modern ODIs, which puts all our eggs in the final 15 overs, what’s worse is that we are still losing early wickets. What happens when are set 350+ and we have a couple of openers who struggle to score at 6rpo? Maxwell’s role at the top would be akin to McCullum’s in the last World Cup, try and get the team to 100 as soon as possible, which takes pressure off his opening partner and the rest of the team; and if he goes out cheaply then David Warner comes in and plays his normal game, which is more sedate than one expects.

Short should have been a no brainer.

I don’t think Carey is up to it at the moment, has a habit of finding ways to get himself out and his domestic record doesn’t stack up. We don’t have any exceptional spinners that require a specialist keeper so I think Handscomb would suffice.

It’s still fascinating (to me) at how much a change of format can result in a change of outcomes for some players. Some are obvious - the big hitting, high risk batsmen - but many are not. Sharma struggled in the tests, gets dropped, but 1st ODI looks magnificent. Marsh is batting with freedom. Handscomb looks class. We could barely make 250 in a Test innings, knock up 300 in 50 overs with the white ball. It’s so much between the ears, this game.

The cynic in me tells me that is because the best bowlers are missing.

The issue that has been difficult with Maxwell is that they keep trying him in different positions. He isn’t an opener, it is why they don’t use him in that position in domestic cricket. And he rarely opens in T20 these days.

He needs to be played at 4 or at worst 5, no other possy. And if Warner is playing you don’t put him in at 3, he is an opener and has done well there.

So you either run with Warner/Carey or Warner/Short. You don’t put Maxwell there and Warner at 3.

Sounds like the docs, physio etc are more concerned with protecting the players than building their work capacity.
Ironic given the latter is the single best way to avoid injury.

you jinxed him!

Stoinis ahead of Maxwell? Geez louise.

and that is not me being critical of Stoinis, I like him.

Inevitable. Unfortunately.

If they insist on using him basically as a last 10 over slugger then the upper order need to bat accordingly. Accelerate earlier.

Warner to open, Maxwell to 3, Carey to 6, Finch to state cricket.

I would agree except Khawaja is 3 and that isn’t going to change that soon.

Well he’ll just have to get used to 4 or 5.
Or he can be replaced.

Is this the same Finch that scored 156 odd from 63 balls against England not too long ago? Good gracious, shows what confidence does.

That was a T20, in ODI’s he struggles far too much. It is either drought or monsoon, he doesn’t have enough grafting innings. He averages 36 in ODI’s and I don’t think that is good enough.
