A KILLER rang 000 twice and calmly told operators he had slashed his wife’s throat and to come collect her body.
Parminder Singh, 29, has indicated to the Magistrates’ Court he will plead not guilty to the shocking murder of his wife Nikita Chawla on the grounds of mental impairment.
In disturbing audio before the court and released to the Herald Sun on Friday, Mr Singh is heard telling the emergency operator he killed the talented dancer because he suspected her of cheating on him.
The 23-year-old died in the early hours of January 9 in her Brunswick West flat.
“Come and collect the body,’’ he tells the first operator. “I killed her.’’
When asked if he had any weapons, Mr Singh responds: “I had one big knife I used to cut her throat.’’
The killer confirmed he was neither drunk nor alcohol affected and that he had suffered from “anger anxiety’’ in the past.
When transferred to a policeman, Mr Singh continued his extraordinary statement.
“I got my wife, right, I killed her. I love her so much, I had a bright future with her and then she’s been cheating on me … I just find out today and I … I think my anxiety took over and then I lost it.
“I think I couldn’t control myself and I hold a big knife and kept hitting her until she stopped breathing.’’
At 1.49am – 12 minutes after his first call – Mr Singh calls again.
“Man, I killed my wife,’’ he repeats.
He then flagged down a paramedic enroute to the ■■■■■■ scene and tells paramedic Ken Potter the same thing.
When interviewed by police, Mr Singh told police he killed his wife because she had cheated on him.
“But I don’t know why she cheated on me,’’ he told police. “I told her, ‘if you have anyone I’ll let you go. Please keep me in the loop. I want you happy.’
“She lies, lied and she’s not smart enough.”
Mr Singh told police his wife used her birthdate as her phone password, which he used to access her text messages.
Days before she died, Ms Chawla allegedly told her husband she wanted to move out.
Police claim Mr Singh became suspicious and checked her phone as she slept.
He found messages from a contact named Jodene that contained photos of a bearded man.
He told police he felt angry and he could not remember what happened next.
“She was breathing heavily and she was bleeding, and I was like, “Why am I holding knife and why is she sick?,’’ he told police.
Court documents reveal Mr Singh had a history of depression and has expressed feelings of anger and anxiety in the year leading up to Ms Chawla’s horrific death.
In November last year – months before she would die – Ms Chawla returned to India to visit friends and family.
While there, she allegedly commenced a friendship with a work colleague – the bearded man who texted his photo to her on the night she would be killed.
Police claim the pair became close and Ms Chawla talked to a friend about leaving her husband.
Days later she was dead.
Mr Singh will appear before the Supreme Court on Monday.
