I went private - had an obstetrician during the pregnancy which was good as I had consistency of support throughout the pregnancy. Particularly useful if you have any health problems that need monitoring. In public system, i understand that you see which ever midwife is available. My obstetrician delivered both babies and i found that reassuring.
Having a room to myself after delivery was really good. It can take up to three days for a mothers milk to come in, so staying the 4 days that I was able to as a private patient was worth it.
Private health is worthwhile for elective surgery. A friend and I had the same debilitating condition. I was operated within a week with private health, he had to wait 5 months. Also, the private hospitals arenât under the pressure of public hospitals to move you out quickly.
If itâs an emergency, public is better, but you canât always get in and on some occasions I have been forced to go to a private hospital.
Spending any length of time in a public hospital is no fun if you are stuck with the room mate from hell and the food is inedible.
Out patient rehab after an accident can be the luck of the draw, as physio and other therapy can be quite expensive outside of private cover.
There can also be high costs if you have ongoing need of a specialist who might only work in a private hospital.
Overall, I see it as a safety net , but I can understand why the young and healthy arenât signing on.
