I was chipped for calling a semi a truck, as bad as calling a ship a boat. A semi is articulated.
In the UK, there are buses and coaches, but that distinction relates to public transport services. I used to get confused with some European train services. ‘Omnibus’ was a stopping all stations train service.
The US has flatbeds. No Utes.
When my brother was a baby he would point to trucks and say “Look … a big ■■■■”
My mum would say “lorry, it’s a lorry”
I’ve also heard them called juggernauts and pantechnicons.
In the early days of punk when band members were using fictional names (ref. Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious et al) there was a Laurie Driver and a Cliff Hanger getting around.
I’ve noticed that the yanks also call their big utes “trucks”.
The pantechnicons were semis with more than one articulated trailer - the big ones with 3 or more, that are impossible to overtake when you aren’t on a divided road.
There was a big issue about allowing the Continental ones on English roads, foreigners bringing in foreign products into England, upsetting the rural English way of life as they thundered off the Dover and Folkestone ferry lorry terminals.
Could their drivers be described as “semi-articulate”?
So annoying when residents report B-Doubles in their street, and they may not even be semi-trailers.
I think it depends on who you are. Kenworth Trucks makes, among other things, semi trailer prime movers.
The chipping was from a semi driver of large cargoes, who considered himself superior to mere truck drivers.
Pantechs are removalist style trucks.
Because they normally are. The hierarchy of truck drivers is normally attached to the license you hold. The higher the license often means better pay and therefore status.
I’ve still got a HC licence but hardly ever drive anymore and the MC guys and gals still give me grief about it
The poor LR drivers cop the most flak though and had the lowest paid jobs but we even scrapped that and MR is now the minimum requirement to get work with us
This was years ago and the Brits were struggling to give it a label to distinguish the big ones from lorries, some were calling them juggernauts ( new to Brit roads at the time).
Genuine question why do mods continually lock down dodoro threads.
Yes there is criticism of him in them but he was a part of the club we should be able to discuss it.
Have they been threatened with legal action or something ?
Basically, every posting around Dodoro invariably includes personal abuse, derogatory terms and unfounded speculation / innuendo / assumptions. After discussion with the site owner we’ve opted as a collective to be conservative with leaving the site open to legal issues, whether real or imagined.
That’s fair enough but wouldn’t it be better to caution posters against wrong doing rather than shutting down a entire discussion about a figure that’s crucial to essendon
Posters were cautioned over and over. For some, derogatory speculation and innuendo directed to his character is all they want to post.
Why Dodoro thread shutdown?
Edit: have bothered to read above. Apparently potentially legal threats, presumably from Dodoro and/or supporters.
What a watermark that bloke was on the history of the club…
Theres a certain headline running in the age/smh about Adrian Dodoro and the club which I think explains a bit.
It’s reached a point where cautioning posters really does little - on certain topics - and we - the moderation team - do not have unlimited time on here. I was offline for most of yesterday due to work for example, and then deleted 30 or so posts last night that were more or less character assessments - to put it politely. They’d been up for hours, which isn’t ideal. Especially if there’s something legal going on between him and the club, we’d rather not put Rollo inadvertently in the cross fire, however unlikely. Particularly just for posters to air their grievances in usually vitriolic manner. In our opinion, the site is no worse for a lack of abuse at his character. He’s gone, and at some point people will understandably want to discuss the drafting and trading record - which we’ll have to find a way to accommodate , but launching into the fair work thing right now doesn’t add much in our opinion.
And I’ll leave it at that.
My point was getting to the point is that it’s alright to do it with players and other posters but dodoro is off limits doesn’t make sense
Just found Zero Hanger website. Anyone know who runs it.
