Good post. We have the Dreamtime Game to celebrate indigenous culture. Essendon’s jumper shouldn’t become someone’s ‘plaything’. I didn’t particularly like the one off seatbelt guernsey, to me it set a concerning precedent the jumper can be changed with the stroke of a pen (receipt of $$).
The clash jumper should be separate and unrelated to the themed rounds / celebration rounds.
Because I’m a traditionalist with respect to our guernsey. I don’t like it being changed as a rule. Although for things like indigenous round, ANZAC Day I’m aligned. Outside of that, I’m against it in principle. And if we have to have a clash strip, it needs to retain as much dna as possible. Red sash being most important.
To me, winning games isn’t all that matters. Our history and tradition to me is sacrosanct. Just my view.
I don’t disagree, but reality says we have to have a clash guernsey. Most of ours throughout the years have at least had some link to something identifiable as ‘Essendon’, which is good. Last years was probably my least favourite, glad there is more black next year.
I bitched and moaned massively when we first started wearing a clash jumper. Didn’t think they’re necessary and probably still don’t.
But we have to have a clash jumper and the current one sucks. An inverse sash is not much better. Give it meaning, relevance and a story with an indigenous design.
I agree. Although Collingwood have been able to maintain a clash strip that basically isn’t and get away with it. I think the Marketing gurus are all for clash strips to allow them to keep turning them over to generate revenue.
PS: If we had a strong, strategic and diverse business we would be less reliant on winning games and needing to actually rely on gimmicky clash strips that usual detract from the Clubs brand, tradition and look s…t tbh.
At first glance, that red looks a slightly different shade to the logo and other Essendon reds.
But I’ll attribute that to the photo being taken and the lighting.
