Four Vic Police killed by a truck on the Eastern Freeway

Its a terrible reason. Nobody forced him to go on a bender.

Throw the fkg book at him.

“massive” high? How do you know that?
No excuses.
He was calm enough to take the picks, leg it, then post the pics and brag to his mates.
He’s a massive ■■■■, I’ll give you that.

I think there needs to be a LOT more effort put in to this. Not just for educating the public that the law now states you must slow to 40 when passing emergency vehicles with lights flashing.

But making sure that it is safe to do so on a freeway with a speed limit of 100.

Shortly after this law was introduced, I was on the Ring Road doing 100 in the right lane, and it was peak hour, when a cop a fair way up ahead pulled someone over in to the left hand service lane. I started to slow, very gradually, when I got down to about 60 I felt extremely ■■■■■■■ unsafe, I was 100% about to cause a major accident, and very quickly sped up to about 80. This was not herd mentality on my part as someone earlier in the thread stated, this was self preservation.

You absolutely cannot expect drivers to self regulate slowing down to 40, when on a freeway doing 100. All of those drivers will see that cop car at a different time, some won’t at all. Some will know the law change, some won’t and some won’t care. Everyone will have a different idea as to how far out they need to slow down.

Those cars were pulled over for 50minutes before the accident! There should have been electronic speed limit signs flashing the 40 speed limit 2km up the road, 60 1km before that and 80 1km before that. And they should have been in place for at least the 45 minutes prior to the crash.

As hard as it might be to separate them, … the Porsche Douche, is not responsible for the accident, nor the Deaths. What he did then was deplorable, … but I;ve seen this a few times.

Cops pulling over someone in an Emergency Lane at peak hour on a Freeway , that’s still allowed to travel at 100km per fkn hour, with absolutely Zero wriggle room, is, and always has been, a recipe for disaster. Especially when there’s Trucks doing 100kmph.

I’ve thought about it many times when I’ve seen it occur. They really should change practice,… get them to pull into an off ramp, then pull over or something.

Also,… Semi’s etc should only be allowed on roads from 9PM to 5Am or something. They have no Business being in amongst Traffic like that at that speed. Fk I hate 'em in Peak hour.

Something like this. However, it might take more than 5 minutes to activate variable limits (not sure if they are actually in place on that road section) and the cops may not have expected to be there very long at first so may not have communicated a need for it early? In any case, over that period of time and with a car to be removed, a truck-mounted attenuator might have been useful.

Although they are both absolutely unforgivable d/ck moves, I can kind of understand taking the photos, it might be something that someone in shock would do. I can also kind of understand running (though absolutely barely).

I cannot understand uploading the photos on Facebook. That is unbelievable

It’s possible they want to avoid a pursuit through urban streets with more potential conflict points, vulnerable road users etc.

Last I checked those electronic speed signs aren’t on that stretch of freeway (has been a couple of years though). But that’s partly my point, they need to be installed on ALL stretches of urban freeway.

Or do as they do in Germany on the autobahns (which seems to work quite well):

  1. First person to see flashing lights turns on their hazard lights and slows. (That’s why the button is prominent by the way)
  2. Following people (i.e. everyone else) that see hazard lights turn on their hazard lights and slow down.

From experience, it’s such a light show that you can’t miss it, and everybody slows.

Maybe that’s a bit too common sense for Australia.

There are none on the Eastern, plus if everyone was well off the running lanes in the emergency lane, the speed generally is not dropped.

Sounds good, … almost perfect.

Yes I know, that’s my point.

Seems like a really common thing in Europe to use hazards as a warning to other drivers that something is coming up ahead.

Yep, absolutely fantastic how they use their hazard lights. Really effective for road works aswell

Maybe not responsible, but certainly contributory.

Pretty sure its passed as law down here that any emercency flashing lights and 40 is the speed limit.
But all cars putting on hazards seems a good idea.

Condolences to all family and friends involved in this tragic occurrence.

As contributory as anyone else pulled over into an Emergency lane for whatever on a Freeway, at Peak Hour, still rated to travel on at 100 k’s, … yeah.

In the video he says “the ■■■■■ are harassing me and that’s justice”

… What a bloke.

Christ almighty! Really?? :astonished:
