Was that the suspension for abusing that prick Kevin Smith? Smith said Ronnie threatened to have a contract put on himš
From what I recall, from how he behaved in that game, he was lucky to only get one week.
We didnāt get to see the best of Fabulous Phil. In his Norwood days there were literally players too scared to stand him. My old man reckons he was also one of the most talented players he had ever seen and reckoned that if he didnāt have a screw loose he could have won multiple Brownlows
Ron Andrews, Cameron Clayton and Roger Merret were the toughest players that I have seen play.
Thereās a clip Iāve seen of Clayton whacking Dipper in a game circa 82-83? Just gives him one and the crowd went nuts! Iād love to be old enough to have seen Ronnie play. Having met him and know what a ripper of a bloke he was, that wouldāve been cool to see him take no prisoners!
I reckon Cameron Clayton whacking Dipper was 1983. It was the square up for Dipper ironing out Alan Stoneham at Princess Park earlier in the season. That hit on Stoneham basically ended his career.
Stoneham had the worst looking eye l have ever seen in sport, including boxing. It looked like he had been hit with a hammer, it was completely closed. Stoneham was a decent player as well.
Dipper was just one of a long line of Dawk thugs, and had the sharpest elbows in the game.
Which made it so offensive when Scott accused big Roger.
Scott himself, Dipper, Matthews, Ayres, Breretonā¦great players all, but outright thugs.
This was pretty dirty, I still love longy though.
A great captain and tough as nails, TD could hand it out when required.
Totally. Ask G.Brown.
It was at Windy Hill late 83. Rattler went up to Dipper and decked him.
83 was odd. We pumped the Hawks twice yet got thrashed in the GF.
Ignoring what happened with Stoneham, Saltbush and Tim, the Hawks were fresh and ripe for the GF.
Totally.
G Brown sniped someone from behind.
TD observed, ran up to him, turned him around and decked him.
Got multiple weeks (6 iirc) but was worth it.
Shame we lost that GF
Brown whacked Kieran Sporn, and TD squared up. Rarely mentioned, I think there was some podcast or interview where that was discussed and they said that Brown was the one that went in first.
TD got 13 weeks for 2 separate incidents from that 1990 GF. There used to be a countdown banner at the Napier St end behind the goals at Windy Hill saying āx weeks until TD is backā!
Ken Fletcher is underrated all elbow and knees, would go the trip like his son, but with a bit more force and abandon on occasions.
Boots too. Opened Billy Barrotās face at the G one day.
What happened is that Banks kicked Sporn who then retaliated by striking Banks - Then it unfolds.
TD never did really come back from that long suspension. When he came back the game had moved on and he could never pick up the speed.
Yes. At the time I remember Collingwood supporters wanting TD rubbed out forever saying he king hit Brown from behind. But then other ch 7 footage came out, not shown on TV on the day, clearly showing Brown shaped up to TD and Terry just dropped him, hard, with one punch. You shouldnāt shape up unless you are prepared to get hit!
Thirteen weeks was an over reaction by the tribunal. 6 for the hit on Brown and I think 7 for striking Starcevich (there was no footage of this but from all accounts Terry whacked him behind play. At the time we were losing a gf and Starcevich was close to best on).
In that era 6 to 8 weeks would have been fair.
Colin Robertson swears black & blue that Tim Watson shaped up to him in the 83 GF. Reckons he was unfairly labelled a king hitter, when in fact he reckons Tim saw it coming, he just got in first.
TD got 7 plus the preseason series (2 games) for Brown, and 4 for Farcevich. IIRC he didnāt drop the latter behind play, he coat hangered him, either in a marking contest or covering an attempted baulk.
