I was listening to an interview with a guy who is involved in soccer and he was so enthusiastic about the womens comp they have - and how good the standard has become, with the Matilda's leading the way in providing great role models. He also said that soccer had the highest participation of any other sport in Aus. Possibly the reason the afl was anxious to get the women's comp up.
Its pretty clear from the responses, the majority dont care. But i understand the people who do and thats cool
Id be interested to knowâŚif essendon had a womens team, then would you care? For me, itâd still be nup. Its hard enough to take a active interest in the vfl side but thatâs clearly because i live here. But il admit the last 2 years ive been trying to get replays, follow live on GameDay here etc

Probably not
I donât watch any non-elite sport unless I know people involved
I wonât even watch the bottom AFL sides play
Dissclaimer: I might have it (VFL) on the TV in the background at home but I donât ever sit down and watch it/pay too much attention
I actually don't know that it'll be financially sustainable in the long term.
It would be if there was some sex appeal to it. As bad and unpolitically correct people may think it is just tightening the shorts and tops would increase the viewers significantly. Otherwise i canât see men taking much interest at all.

Itâs sad that it needs to become that for it to be interesting to people. It needs alot of time and money to be put into it, doubt the AFL will bother putting that much time into it.
Soccer has great participation figures because it's so easy to put a game on and play socially. Same with basketball
Yup, all you need is something to kick around and you can play a pick up game.
Basketball is also great for kids because everyone is likely to touch the ball a lot and even score frequently

LFL failure says otherwise
And itâs not as though beach volleyball is the worlds most popular sport

Soccer has huge participation numbers because of Futsal. FFA/FFV take registrations for pretty much all competitions. A match takes 40 minutes. Kids play after school comps. Adults play social comps after work.
Iâve seen exactly one quarter of womenâs footy. It was the last quarter of that exhibition game that a million people watched. I was pleasantly surprised at the standard - I guess I wasnât expecting much, but they were very committed, quick, the skills were pretty good. When it starts up, Iâll watch it a bit from time to time, and if the standard I saw in the exhibition game is matched regularly, Iâll be happy to watch it some more. Canât see myself getting into it in a big way, eg, donât think Iâd go to a game, and if EFC ever enters a team I will be more interested. But all things considered, I view it as a positive development for the game, so I hope it succeeds.
No interest until EFC has a team, and even then only a slight interest, ie somewhat less than the reserves/VFL team.
I donât attend VFL games but I do watch on TV if EFC is televised. I definitely would not pay money to watch the womenâs league, but I may watch some on TV if Essendon has a team in the future. Even then, I think the novelty would wear off pretty quickly for me.

Comforting to know that some things are virtually unchangeable. Sex still rates.
It might be interesting because theyâve pulled all these girls from different sports to form the competition. But will I take any notice of the games? Nope.

I have no interest. The only womenâs sport I watch on occasion is tennis during a grand slam. Even then Iâm usually waiting for a menâs match to come on unless itâs an Aussie.

That reflects the participation numbers.
Perhaps the AFL can approach Hawthornâs membership department for ideas?

Youâre an idiot.
Exactly.
The only time itâs acceptable to ogle footballers, is in the pre season training threads.
