on the topic of battle ropes; my PLing coach in the States says the guys at his gym used to do up to 20 minutes continuously so the gym owner invested in these

a typical battling rope weighs 15kg - these are 55kg lol

How do I increase my VO2 max?

Isn't VO2 genetic? I know very little about this but my understanding was that while you could improve your cardio fitness your VO2 max was set.
I'm happy to be told I'm wrong here, interested in the discussion.
As far as improving cardio fitness/ VO2 max, hill reps are good on bike or running and also the old favourite, stair climbing. Fartleks are also good. (I swear I didn't just make that word up)

Your VO2 max is merely a test/measure of your ā€˜cardio’ in the same way a deadlift is a test of strength and a 100m sprint is a test of speed

No.

It's how much oxygen (stands for Volume of O2 (the oxygen molecule) ) your body can shift around.

Pretty standard measure used by sports scientists etc.

I’m interested in increasing VO2 to make repeat efforts. Currently it feels like I can make one big effort on a hill climb, then I’m out if breath for 10min or more. Bit if there’s a better way to increase cardio/recovery than ā€œjust more hill climbsā€ I’m interested. Have read about doing cardio while breathing through a straw!

Tabata. Rowing or running. Do a few sets of those each day

all bets are off until new years. the word health literally means nothing to me for the next two weeks

anyone here done a acl before and tips to strengthen my leg and make my recovery shorter?

You should be trying to build the muscles directly connected to the knee

Knee extensions, hamstring curls and seated calf raises for high reps (15-100) 4+ times a week

Extremely high rep resistance exercises have been shown to strengthen tendons and ligaments, plus promote a great deal of blood flow to the muscles and connecting joint which aids in recovery

Speaking of which, if you mobility is poor not as much blood can reach the area and your recovery time will be hampered so make sure you’re nice and supple!

Don’t do anything stupid like breathing through a straw or wearing an ā€œelevation maskā€

You need to be working on both high intensity/short duration efforts (like the tabata YT mentioned) and also lower intensity/long duration efforts eg 20+ minutes of continuos work. When I say lower intensity though I don’t mean a casual stroll (save that for recovery on off days). It should be of high enough intensity that if you’re at the absolute limits of your aerobic capacity

This article delves a bit into the science of it

I know three people who've done ACLs , two of them have re-injured it or something else trying to recover quicker.
Be really careful. Err on the side of caution.
They'll tell you a certain time you should be completely off it, then light use etc. They're not bullshitting.

Eat "tainted meat" in China.

cheers. im 3 weeks post op and walking okay now. I was only on crutches for about 2, and ive been weigh bearing since day 1, the crutches were just a aid. I think im doing better so far than I expected

Never looked at tabata before. So 4min/day actually achieves something? Crazy.

Also Eastie I tried reading that link but too many big words … what kind of 20 min efforts? Just running for that time, or excercises? Just please don’t say weights. Screw weights.

Anything you can sustain for 20 minutes

Cycling, swimming, rowing, airdyne bike etc

And I would personally suggest doing 3-4 tabatas with 3-5 minutes between them over just 1

Got it.

Swimming is something I’m thinking of taking up next year, maybe aim for a half-Tri in a few months.

Ask your physio. I'd be concentrating on rehab non stop.

Here's a great article on ACL's and a background into surgery recovery etc.

I will quote properly next time

At our powerlifting xmas eve lunch we were discussing eating stories etc (well that's not what we were discussing but this story came up anyway haha)

Ā

It was about a lifter called Gary Frank at either the 2006 or 2007 WPO world championships.

The first part of the story is that his squat opener was 455kg, and to warm up all he did was put 185kg on the bar and do 4-5 1/4 reps, then progress to 350kg and do 2-3 1/2 reps then go out on the platform lol.

The second part of the story is that while everyone was warming up for deadlifts he had disappeared and no one saw him until he was called up to the platform to lift - at this point he stands up in the crowd (this guy was 195cm+ and 160kg+ so hard to miss lol) hands an ice cream cone he's eating to the person next to him, walks up to the platform and pulls 365kg before walking back into the crowd to sit down and finish his ice cream.

His training partners also told my friend it could take them up to 8 hours to do his squats on training days because they would sit around between sets and order pizza, chinese etc lol

Same. It's been a complete write off.
