Did a 1000 steps yesterday. A bit more full on that I expected but not too bad!

How is it near the end (but you don't know it's near the end at the time), and the steps get bigger, and you think " f*ck me, I may have to stop " ?
It's pretty challenging if you haven't done much cardio for a while, particularly since you need to walk up an incline for a bit before you even begin the steps !

Yeah, I had that feeling and someone going past was like "it's just around the corner". It's not has hard as it sounds, but not as easy as it could look.

The incline got me. It's not so much strength that gets you but the repeated efforts in the endurance needed to get there.

If you're fit as you could smash it in 10-15 mins. I did it in about 25-30 lol next time i'm aiming for under 20 and no stops.

I was up there over xmas, I didnt realise they had added steps to the fire trail that goes up the left, I used to run up that as it was less crowded.

Stupid me went up there on the sunday between xmas and new year and it was packed.

Best time I reckon is in the evening when the sun isn't at its worst and the tourists have gone away. Pretty hectic either way though.

You guys should try running up the steps then all the way to Mt Dandenong

Second worst footy run ever after Mooroolbark -The Basin - Montrose up the fire trail - Mt Dandenong - Silvan - Mt Evelyn

The Old Coach Rd from Montrose to Kalorama is evil!

Post football career I think any running is evil

That however, in a religious sense would be Satan

I'm curious now. Do you just follow the path up the hill and keep going?

I ran a marathon on Sunday 3 Hours 37 minutes.

dropped 2.5k in 1 week.
cut sugar and all starchy carbs
walked an hour and a 1/2 a day

I dropped 2.5K last week, that's pretty much what a year of crossfit costs
he he typo. how do you know someone does crossfit? cause they'll tell you.

You're probably right, but I reckon the info to is so chilled out it's not like what I imagine some of them to be. Sure there's the alpha flog types, but thankfully they have other times to train..

What's everyone's experience with fitness Apps?

I've restarted using My Fitness Pal which I've found to be good for counting calories. The main benefit for me is highlighting when I've made a particularly bad food choice. I don't really use anything to track gym sessions but keep a record of the weights I'm lifting in notepad.

I'm starting at 102.5kg with a goal to lose 10kg. Most advice seems to indicate this should take me between 10 and 20 weeks. My sister's wedding in April is a reasonable target which gives me 13 weeks. As long as I'm eating well and steadily losing the weight I'll probably be happy regardless. For now I'm concentrating on cardio and diet. I do some weights when I have time but it's not really in a structured way.

I have an app called Meteor for my weight logging

It let’s me organise everything into folders which is handy cos I’m got about a 1000 exercises I rotate through lol

Basically. At some point it hits a main road and from there you follow the signs along the road to Mt Dandenong!

My fitness pal highlights poor food choices, i think its time consuming as you need to enter everything, but if you stick to your calorie limit it can work plus excercise gives you more calories to eat and you know what a 5km run = in extra food so dont over eat after excercise. I think with all diets its about portion size, once you reduce that and try to eat healthier foods you will reap the rewards If you get takeaway share it with your partner rather than getting a seperate meal each, have a small rice, etc.

A lot also depends on who is preparing the meals for you, I know when i go to my mums she serves up heaps of food and always has desert when we come over for dinner. I guess you just need to let people know that you only want a smaller portion.

I think concentrating on cardio and diet is a good start, my friend who used to do lots of weights found it difficult to lose the weight until he did less weight and more cardio (he ended up losing 50+kgs).

My favourite fitness app is strava, it tracks your running / cycling times, if you run or cycle you should download the app and check it out.

That is a great time. I am guessing Hobart, which makes your time even better given it was a slow course due to the wind.

Yeh it was Hobart, it was my first ever marathon, there was a bit of wind on the first return leg, we made a train and used a bit of drafting. There was also a cross wind which i found difficult as its hard to run side by side with competitors.

Not sure what event to do next, as i need something else to train for.

Good work mate, went out for a look as I had a few mates race out there and all said the wind made it tough going. Enjoy the achievement and some recovery time, plenty of other races down here through the year to have a crack at!

Thinking of doing the GC marathon this year.  Need to decide soon for some training.

Imo signing up for competition/events is the second best (behind joining a team with a bunch of people better than you) thing you can do or your training

■■■■ gets real when your name is going to be on a scoresheet or result card lol

Anyone done much open water swimming? I've signed up for the San Remo Channel Challenge, and would love some tips as I aint much of a swimmer...

I can tell you it is a lot harder than 'closed' water swimming!

I would almost be tempted to get some surfing lessons; just cos they're likely to tell you how to swim with/against currents

Otherwise have you tried looking for an Ironman or Triathlon forum? plenty of guys there should be able to help

i did a couple of sprint triathlons a in 2012, which involves swims 200-500m not really long but i guess things to note are...

- what is the water temperature of the swim? will you need a wet suit?  95% of people who do triathlons in Tasmania wear wetsuits for swim leg.

If you need a wetsuit maybe you should practice training in one or at least know it feels to swim in one versus bathers.

- Its also a bit of a blur racing in open water with other competitors as everyone makes a hell of a splash at the start, try to get some open water for yourself. as its not nice getting kicked and smacked as others are going past you Or slowing down in front of you.

Hit a 20kg pr with the safety squat bar today

Absolutely hate it but it’s a good indicator of where my comp squat is

Next meet is in May - pretty confident of 245-250 though I’m more interested in totalling 600. Which would need a 240 squat, 125 bench and 235 deadlift
