How do we fix the forward line?

So yes, my solution is Redman

The last time you pumped up a forward prospect almost this much, was Jay Neagle !

Not true, I’ve talked up Hurley as a forward since then…

The problem is 2 fold and they are as follows

  1. Ball movement
  2. leading targets

If you don’t have quick ball movement fwd’s don’t have space to lead into.
If fwd’s mistime leads, and don’t lead into space, then the ball carrier will hold the ball.

The amount of times I see us lead to early amazes me, then there is the halfhearted lead to late. Or the pointers (looking at you Joe). When I was a kid I was taught to wait for the the kicker to lift his eyes before leading, and if you are not in his field of vision he cant see you therefore can’t kick it to you. Simple I know but good advice.

Move the ball fast and be brave with the ball (as Hirdy puts it). We cannot just chip the ball around at half back (gwilt) by the time this happens the defense has already flooded back, and you can’t score. The first option is 9 times out of 10 the best option. By the time you have waited for the second one, the defense have setup and you can’t score. If you cant pinpoint a kick to the space in front of your target while under pressure you shouldn’t be playing AFL footy. This is why the Hawks are so darn good. They can all hit targets.

These days if you don’t take the game on from half back you cannot score. Defensive zones and players flooding back have made it so much harder to score. We need good leading marking, hard working half fwd’s. Langford and Lav on the HFF’s. Plus a Nick Revolt type CHF, who runs all day. Weather Joe can do this I am unsure. The midfielders and especially the ruckman also need to be targets. Our halfbacks and wingers need to push up and create over lap run. As basic as it sounds we simply need to run and spread faster coming out of defense then the op can flood space.

Under knights we did this pretty well but had zero defense. Under bomber/Hird we had great defense but couldn’t score. The good teams have a balance of both. Getting that balance is difficult and it takes time playing together as a team to achieve this.

Get the ball in there quicker. By time we chip it around several times the opposition have flooded numbers back and it's alway 1 on 2 or 3.

This is pretty much it, plus a couple more to help joe shiw

I know Carlton kept flooding back but nothing irritates me more than when a player marks 50m out and goes backwards 40m. We then chip it around 4 or 5 more times and the ball ends up where the initial player marked it a minute beforehand still 50m out!

and by that stage the opposition have flooded back in numbers

…Then he holds on to it until the umpire calls play on - then kicks in a panic straight to an opposition player. They do it over and over again.

Agreed. They’ve got this part of the drill working really well!

Hartley from HB bombs it long to Jamar in the square.

65% of goals come from turn overs. We need to sort out the zone defence, put more pressure on the ball carrier, & then hit our targets when moving the ball into the forward line.

Theoretically that’s what we do now.
when a turnover comes and we get the ball there’s no one in front of the ball carrier to kick it too.
which leads to panic, which in turn ultimately results more often than not in our turn over.

I’m one who gets you have to move forwards up the ground, but we’ve steadily got worse and worse at this where they push up way too far.

Whatever the case may be, it is not working out that well at present.

True.
You cant see it on TV, but there’s no one home.
That’s why all those frustrating midfield hand passes happen.
Lloyd & Lucas would now be so far up the ground they would never have become champions.

Agree that the forward line is all too far up the ground - try leaving Grimley, McKernan, Jamar or Michael plus a small forward inside 50 metres. It is too easy to take intercept marks near our goals. Grimley, Jamar and Michael can mark and goal. McKernan is more mobile so an extra plus. Daniher needs space and should play up the ground. Remember Lloyd near the goal square and Lucas across the half forward line.
start drafting for a gun midfield.

take the best mid (probably best player) available with our first pick.

take a clearance mid with our 2nd pick

take an outside fast mid with our 3rd pick.

when midfield class shines through the forwards will have the time and space to make proper leads and get in scoring shots. Less joe leading to the left pocket and have to kick on his left and hoof the ball oobotf.

Firstly what forwards? Secondly how are you going to stop Joe leading to the pocket? LOL Been doing it now for three years, keeps getting picked, and keeps getting the ball delivered on his head because where else is it supposed to go when delivered to a stationary target?

by showing him replays of us losing to carlton 1999.

And that going to help how?

you’re the one that asked the question, haven’t seen you suggest anything.

Too many people at Essendon have a ā€œMessiahā€ complex. ( maybe also at other clubs but I dont know or give a **** )

Potential Messiahs in the 2016 list ( who is your bandwagon hooked onto ?) Joey, Eades, Longy, Redman, Conor …
Actual Messiahs ( 1900-2000 ) Coleman, Lloyd.

I reckon Messiahs come about once every 100 years. Which is really not enough for my liking .

No, there is no ready made Messiah most of the time. It is a chicken and egg thing. There is a coach that creates a forward line structure and method. He develops the system, then selects the players that can execute it and buy in to work within that structure.

Then someone emerges. He becomes the messiah. Chicken and Egg.

Haven’t you? Perhaps you need to go back to page 1 and have a look

most of the time, the midfielders want to kick the ball 20-30 meters out from goal. That’s the most congested part of the ground. No wonder the ball sling shots out of our defensive 50.

The midfield needs to lower their eyes and be content with hitting a target 35-50 meters out from goal. You only need to have a look at Tippa. He’s absolutey precise when kicking inside 50. He’s happy to hit a target 15 meters away, 45 meters out. Instead of kicking to the top of the square.

Recruit blokes with monster kicks to hoof it over the crowded defence through the sticks. Simples.

I propose we place all of Blitz' great minds in a room Jury Duty style. They don't come out till solutions are found.

You know who you are…
BakerWasAStar, Ivan, Wimmera, Peos, Mr Sunbury, Saladin, Bender, DJR, plus a few others.

I’m confident that the collective brain power of the above individuals will find the answers !

  • Sandwiches and hot chips provided…

Im obviously not included because my forward line would look like this

Tippa Dempsey Long
Stokes Edwards Eades

Okay, let's recombobulate this. ... Daniher tied by a twenty metre bungee cord to a goalpost. ...

Our players can’t keep their feet as it is and you want to throw a trip rope into the mix?

Somewhere Marigliani is crying a single silent tear.

I’ve got it.
Has anyone got a time machine ?

I've got it. Has anyone got a time machine ?

no lucas or lloyd?

This is actually one of the things that frustrates me. Reluctance to have a shot from 50 when no good alternatives present. We rarely do it.

They were both 7 when that forwardline played together…so no !

Yes, but Chris … Redman really IS the messiah.
