If you back the opposition have you sold your soul?

Betting can be great fun,I don’t bet on our games but it can make ■■■■ games more interesting.im not rich so I only bet small and use it as a form of entertainment.movies would cost me 20 bucks but I would prefer to have 2 10 dollar bets Sunday arvo on 2 games of footy.thats good value entertainment even if I don’t win.ps.im well and truly ahead this year.bet with what you can afford to lose and it’s a great form of entertainment for those with some self discipline

Never done it, but I’ve told a few mates when they should get on an opponent of ours. I remember a few years ago a mate cleaning up on Richmond in one of the dreamtime games. Paid nearly $5 for the win IIRC. My mate was nice enough to kick me $50 as a thank you for the tip.

Stop propping up the corrupt and incompetent AFL (I know, you wouldn’t think one could maintain both of those long-term, but they have a monopoly).

that’s impressive effort if you riled koala up.

On occassion, in a game that doesn't really matter, I will begrudingly allow this practice.

However betting against us in a preliminary final?? Fark right off…

Ouch. Yeah ok. But I don’t bet to make money, I bet to ease the pain of a loss.
So in fact bigger games provide even more incentive.

I’ve done it in a tipping sense, happy to lose the tip for us to win, & have a “well at least I got the tip” moment, & if I did it in a betting sense, I’d look at it as a pre paid penance, In that I’d be saying this is how much I’m prepared to pay, to have a win this w/end. I kind of tithing.

What you do with any winnings, whether you see it as compensation for the pain of a loss, or just an astute little earn, if you seriously had real guilt about it, you could give half, or all of the profit to the club, or a worthy cause.

A couple with connections to the club, would be Mens Cancer, & of course right now, Freeze MND.

Or don’t bet.

I spend it on beer.

Betting on football is completely farked. Hate what it's done to the match day experience. A generation of kids will grow up thinking that it's part of the game. That shittts me to tears.

The match day experience? You mean all those ads they play? But that’s like saying “I hate new cars because of what they’ve done to the match day experience.”

Go to a game at Etihad this season. TAB have paid to put as many as 100 TVs throughout the venue with constant TAB advertising on them. It is completely unescapable. Thankfully, we no longer have constant gambling ads on the big screen and commentators talking about live odds in the breaks. Remember last year at the MCG when a UK betting company sponsored every goal shown on the big screen - that amounted to about 30 minutes of gambling advertising rammed down your throat every single game. You’re an intelligent and educated man Humbert, if you don’t understand why gambling advertisements at the football are problematic, then i can’t help you.

I thought you were talking about the noise of the ads - everyone’s complaining about that these days. I go to all our Etihad games and to be honest hadn’t noticed the TAB screens. Perhaps I’m just oblivious to that stuff? There’s a lot of visual “noise” going on at that place - I tend to just notice the footy, the beer queue, the pie queue and the two big screens.

Anyway, re footy gambling ads in general, I’m an “everything in moderation” kinda guy. A bit of gambling’s fun, a lot is a problem. A bit of gambling advertising’s ok, a lot is a problem. As I mentioned, I hadn’t noticed the advertising you mentioned so it hadn’t bothered me. No doubt I’ll notice it on Sunday now.

She gave me daggers, then she smiled. You can only p!ss her off for so long.

Hey - I’m a few hundred up since the start of the season - they’re propping ME up!

Casinos are designed for losers

Same here

Its wrong Humbert. In your heart you know this and its why you’ve started this thread. To cleanse your soul.

I recommend an exorcism.

meh, never let anyone else tell you ( i know some are probably just joking and messing around) how you should show support.
the 99 one is a bit iffy, maybe you cursed us :O.

it makes sense as some have said being able to read our seasons like a book, you should be able to exploit the system if you so choose.
only problem i’d see is if you started wanting essendon to lose cos of the odds, which i doubt 99.9% of people wouldn’t do, then it’s a problem. if you’re placing a bet on the fact the bookies don’t have a read on us yet, well that’s their problem

been thinking of getting into betting, and have a set limit tha tyou can live without if you lose. some crazy betters out there though, popping 2 grand on 4 legs or something on both football and soccer. sad even when they won as they’d just go and pump it into pokie machines.

I once tipped against us 5 years ago. I felt so guilty that the money I won I donated it to some random website.

Cannot do it

“Some random website” - what odds can I get on it being livejasmin?

DKP, I could never want Essendon to lose. But could there be a situation where I’ve picked us to lose by 36+ points and we’re 40 points behind in the dying seconds and I don’t want our last shot on goal to go through? Ewwww, it could actually happen. Maybe Dodga’s on to something with the exorcism idea.

This really isn’t a big deal. As long as you keep your betting under control, as someone else said I also use it as entertainment. It’s no different to going to a ■■■■ movie or football game or having a quite bevvy.

If you are accurately picking the big upsets/games good on you. As with most things in life moderation is the key.

Having said that I will generally prefer to back us at big odds and have done well over a few years. I also unloaded on Jobe to win the brownlow which made his win extra sweet for me.

I never bet against essendon. If we aren’t value I simply don’t bet.

‘Going to a movie’ is entertainment. It is an experience. You see and hear something new. The movie can be enjoyable, which is fun, or it can be, as you say, ■■■■, in which case it is teaching you how to better choose your movies.

‘Going to a football game’ is as above. It also often provides a bit of excitement. If the game is crap, well, you weren’t to know that. If you knew it was going to be crap and still chose to go, well…you know.

‘a quite bevy’ is escapism. If you are drinking by yourself, it is either through want or need. If it’s ‘want’, it’s hardly entertaining. A drink is a drink. If it’s ‘need’, hmmmm. If it is in company of others, the case can be made that company can be had without a ‘quiet bevy’. WTF does that even mean, anyway? That you don’t yoddle and carry on like a pork chop while drinking? I digress…

‘betting on a game’ is far more like ‘having a quiet bevy’ than like the other two analogies you mentioned. They are just ways to add something to your life that you may find missing sob. A game is exciting enough without the extreme thrill of finding out whether you’ve one a few bob on it or not, I’d wager. teehee.

‘betting on your own team to lose’???
What can I say.

Yes, of course I understand the pseudo logic. It goes something like this -

“I am so insecure in my self, that I find I need to shore my emotions up when a sporting team I like doesn’t win. I do this, by betting that they will lose. Then when they do, I feel happy again. And if they win, I can pretend that I didn’t mind losing the money.”

But of course…if the money was worth winning, it shouldn’t have been worth losing.

If you back the opposition you’re just sh** — and sh** has no soul.

Why do you have to bet on the Essendon games?

Bet on the other games if you want to make money.

I must admit i do this sometimes. You do feel a bit better about a loss if you make some money. But i only do it when i think the odds support it and I probably bet on Essendon as often as i do any opposition.

That said I would never do it for a finals game. That’s where i draw the line personally.
