James Hird — Sept 25 onwards

Fair enough….

Well said. But it is not a reason to debar Hird which the Anti-Hird camp is trying to run in desperation.

well if we select Hird, then they will have to deal with it.

Most opposition fans don’t really care either way. And if they have a bad opinion of Hird it is due to the trial by media not on the actual evidence, which was not sufficient within the Australian courts.

Should Clarkson have been allowed to be a coach given he belted a Carlton player from behind breaking his jaw, in the English exhibition showing he had clear anger issues.

His involvement in the racism scandal at Hawthorn that was swept under the carpet, homophonic slurs against st kilda players, altercations with fans, aggressive run ins with journalists, physical alterations with younger players at north,
that’s all fine with the AFl and afl players and opposition fans though.

I would hope most on here wouldn’t try to weaponise it. Hopefully it is genuine care, but that is for Hird and his circle.

I would be very angered if it were to become a news story peddled by the very scum that contributed greatly to it.

Wow

What a thread this has turned into

Firstly, condolences to Sweatyman. Can’t think of anything worse than losing a child. Under any circumstances.

The ‘arrogant and proud’ premierships. 2000 was won due to the incredible hurt and disappointment due to the 99 loss. 84 (and 85) was won due to the humiliation of losing 83. If you’ve never heard or read Sheedy’s 83 grand final dinner speech do yourself a favour. Sheedy was relentless and drove the already high standards to those flags. He willed them. Not all clubs rebound from bad or unexpected losses from previous year/s. I love Sheedy’s legacy and with a bit of luck (kouta heroics 99, Hird injured 2001, he really should have won 5 maybe 6 premierships. It’s never 100% of only one thing. A bit of this and a bit of that, and a lot of determination and drive led by a manic Sheedy.

I believe the very best candidate, if available, is Horse Longmire. But Only if he is really keen to coach again. A clapped out Ferrari is still a clapped out Ferrari. And not worth a cracker. He is not an Essendon man as such. But he is an exceptional uncompromising football man, with integrity and hardness writ large.

I would not be concerned at all if Hird was appointed, but only after Longmire is eliminated. Many many people have emerged this week with great things to say about his character people skills, passion and determination. Traits that should not be under estimated or dismissed. I’d be fine with Hird getting the gig over any promising young assistant. Promising coaches will always be available.

As for the one well documented dark period in Hird’s life, I have known many people (including myself, family and close friends) that have emerged healthily after treatment and help and copped with life normally, as before. If you have a long term recurring mental problem, an illness, that’s a very different scenario. Hird had an understandable breakdown due to exceptional pressures, which are unlikely to be repeated.

Ah, to check in on Blitz and find more new posts in the Hird thread than the upcoming game v Carlton….

Can you name some of the current players? I haven’t actually heard one single player come out and say they wouldn’t play under Hird. I think Riewoldt seems to be the only past player that isn’t a fan of the selection also.

I’m stopping now. There’s no point arguing with a closed mind.

Flashback OMG

You probably don’t need to worry about Jimmy Hird the person. Thats what friends and family are there for.

Or an incorrect position.

I was more thinking about footballers thinking about a new club. Ie I’m not sure Hird as coach will make us particularly attractive.

But yeah also our current players. The ones that loved Essendon as a junior sure. But we don’t have a whole lot of players who “supported Essendon” as a kid.

To ignore Hird’s baggage just isn’t good due diligence.

Would be a big improvement on Scott.

I get the feeling you might be surprised, I implore you to name any current or former players you can that are anti-Hird.

When you say “ignore” do you mean “not assess” or “assess and deem not a barrier”?

I don’t think players in general are publicly anti any coach.

Doesn’t mean they aren’t. The reaction to Hird putting his hand up for our gig has met some very diverse opinions from neutral - just general public.

I just look at it as what does someone who’s not an Essendon supporter think.(there’s also plenty of our supporters who have had a gutful of Hird.).

I haven’t. Just think he’s not a good choice of Coach. Really want a younger one.
