It’s an obvious loophole that needs to be closed.
If you get drunk and drive you are culpable, despite the fact being drunk means you’re largely incapable of making good decisions

Yep. Amongst the most gutless things l have ever seen on a football field, at any level.
There was game out at Windy Hill when Grinter king-hit Daisy Williams (forward pocket, school end).
Couple of Dees fans at the cricket club pres night that night said that it didn’t look too bad on TV. I just said that you should have seen it from my position. TV had other players in the way.
Funny how many old school footy fans think the era where guys would regularly king hit someone unawares was somehow ‘tough footy’
Even worse they claim the guys coward punching opponents were tougher than the ones with their eyes on the footy!
I get your point, as many thought Roger Merret was a tough player, when I always saw him as a thug who only hit littler blokes.
Ron Andrews, Des Tuddenham, Alec Epis, Bluey Shelton, Dean Solomon were all tough players. Many others as well, but many snipers and hit men as well.
Agree … Billy Duckworth and Harves were surely members of the Bomber tough club, for what they put themselves through too. And I’d add our never take a step backward ruckman Macca too. He literally had the heart of a lion did Don.
Cassin was a sniper. Grinter was hard but a hitman imao. Different era but just as compelling a game back then. Anyways …
Harvey was a nutter. As brave as any player we’ve ever had.
And yes, he didn’t mind the odd whacking of an opponent.
A team needs those types like Harvey even today. Look at KKK. Maynard, Sidebottom, De Goey to name one or two but they allow the Daicos lads and Ginnivan types to play and goad … knowing there’s backup not far away.
Us? I suppose Redders is our default. Lav is there but who else? Guelfi maybe gets involved, Draper sort of I suppose. Its a physical game lets not forget.
I wouldn’t be unhappy if we trade in or draft a late pick mature harder nut and find a position for him as we introduce more time to ADJ, JDJ, Tex et al. Main plan for him? Properly look after our young smalls.
I was always a little perturbed that no one in the team really stood up to protect Alwyn senior. he was targeted week after week with heavy knocks, that were mostly legal but on the borderline. It is a small wonder that he managed to last to get to 100 games, he would not have survived to play 200.
Wait Sidebottom’s an enforcer now?
That would be a first.
Wait Sidebottom’s an enforcer now?
Garry Sidebottom, surely.
Funniest name ever as a kid collecting footy cards.
Apologies to any other Sidebottoms out there.
CTE will be the end of contact sport. If I had kids I wouldn’t let them play.
‘Alarm bells’ for AFL after insurance giant pulls players’ ‘safety net’ amid $1m payouts
I’m not really sure how insurance works for AFL players, so really can’t comment on how significant this is.
This is what I hate about journalism…
Fellow Herald Sun journalist Josh Barnes put himself in the shoes of an AFL player, taking into account the current head trauma climate.
“If I was a player, I’d just be anxious all week and (every) night leading into the weekend,” he said.
Except…
If you’re currently contracted, you are covered. It’s new contracts that are affected.
So why would you be worried day and night.
And why would you take the advice of a journalist in how you should act on this. I’m sure there’s dark better people to rely upon for good advice than a journalist. Dark me, I’d give a google search or a chat gpt answer more than a journalist looking for clicks.
There’s likely to be other insurance firms offering cover. But they don’t even delve into it at all.
They mention in the article that not every player is insured by the same company because an individual has rights to choose their own insurance cover. So the information isn’t the same for all players.
But hey…
Let’s force a panic in the name of ‘news’.
They don’t even say what type of insurance it is being withdrawn from. It sounds like some type of salary continuance cover. Maybe.
Or workers comp; but that is a statutory insurance and the insurer can’t remove concussion as a risk.
Haven’t read a great deal of this thread
What do other sports do like mma, boxing, basically any sport that involves physical contact?
Is it too simplistic for players to sign waivers once drafted acknowledging the risks?
