Make the US Politics Thread Great Again

The plan to repeal the 2015 net neutrality rules also reverses a hallmark decision by the agency to declare broadband as a service as essential as phones and electricity

Left me scratching my head. Of course broadband is an essential service, much of the economy and essential services is provided via it.

Surely this is a ploy to get more people back on cable networks $$

The Portugal thing is like what happens in Australia. Providers give you unmetered data access to certain sites/apps, although here it’s mainly which music service you use. Only for mobile data.

Not a good example of the potential negative implications of the end of net neutrality.

I don’t understand.
I thought DM was saying they pay their provider for the privilege of accessing Spotify.
We don’t do that?

This image is probably a better explanation. You will have to sign up to different plans/packages to access different sites. Much like with cable TV. If you don’t have the “Sports Package” you don’t get to see the MLB Network or Fox Sports 1 (as an example) here in the US.

No we don’t, nor does anywhere in the EU. The pic from Portugal has just been misused. Unmetered access is different, and it happens here.

The pic above, though, is what people fear.

You’re right, it’s not the best example.

The best example would be Telstra for example giving faster access to Foxtel Go and slower access to Netflix. If you want Netflix to go faster then either you need to pay to have faster access to Netflix or Netflix needs to pay Telstra.

In addition should Telstra feel like it, it could also remove all access to it’s competition. So it could block Optus.

So the ISP dictates which part of the net you have access to and also can control the speed you have to access these sites on top of having the abililty to charge extra fees to access them.

@wimmera the above is saying pay 4.99 extra per month to get an additional 10gb of data for these services only. You would still need to pay for the music services as well.

With NBN that cannot happen here. One network, all ISP’s are wholesalers and cannot block anyone.

When you put it like that it sounds a bit…socialist…

Which way?

Just the vibe, man.

Nope. Think of the blocked website thing (pirate bay etc…). This is done at the ISP level, not the wholesaler. They’d redirect you to a if you want this pay up page. Same with speed restrictions on a per website level.

Twitter sums it up best.

This is a long, exhausting read but incredibly detailed and well researched. The gist:

These supporters will not change their minds, because this is what they always wanted: a president who embodies the rage they feel toward those they hate and fear, while reassuring them that that rage is nothing to be ashamed of.

Michael Flynn’s lawyers have told the President’s legal team that they can no longer discuss the Special Counsel’s investigation.

Between his flirtations with kidnap at the behest of Turkey, the exploration of his russian connections, and the possible legal threats to his son there must be a bit of leverage for Mueller to work with.

What a load of utter crap.

The only ones who are running with the hate and fear campaign are the Democrats who continue to stir up their base of spineless little soyboys and feminazis.

LOL
The self projection in that one post.

Have you considered writing a post without all your favourite labels, and just having a conversation instead?

Bit hard to do that in here. Very few conversations take place without people resorting to their favourite tags.
