Make the US Politics Thread Great Again

Firstly, I don’t think what’s happening in Iran right now is remotely on the level of ‘rebellion’. Protests, sure, and pressure for political change, but the govt is in no danger of being violently overthrown any time soon.

And the smart American response to this would be to say something like ‘the government of Iran is a matter for the people of Iran to determine’ and stay the hell out of it. The sad fact is that in that part of the world, American support for regime change has always ended up with bad results, and there’s a hard core of people who would actively oppose reform just because the US backed it. And this would be especially easy given that a lot of the economic problems that are the focus of the protests were caused by Western sanctions (though the fact that when sanctions were loosened as part of the nuclear deal the benefits seemed to be pocketed by corrupt officials didn’t help)

And finally have i missed something, or has Trump’s ‘support’ been limited to nothing more substantial than a tweet?

I think it has just been a tweet of support, yes.

So many people behind that tweet though. If you don’t think he has a team of people working massive hours to come up with a policy you can squeeze into a tweet then you crazy lefties are worse than I thought. Trump Derangement Syndrome clearly.

I’ve never quite understood the antipathy towards the Iranians.

Is it because of the hostages way back when, or their antipathy towards Israel, or their antipathy towards Saudi Arabia and the other Sunni nations?

i think it’s historical more than anything else.

Khomeni WAS a fanatically dangerous loon. Most of the leaders they’ve had since him have backed off a bit, but the memory remains.

(And Trump seems like the sort of guy who forms his opinions on a thing once and then never bothers to re-evaluate them even if circumstances change)

Of course, for the US, the whole ‘hey, we invaded Iraq, deposed Saddam, spent trillions of dollars, slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people, and ■■■■■■ our moral standing in the world up against a wall … and IRAN come out winners??’ is probably a bit of a source of resentment too.

On Trumps comment about aviation safety, it is nothing more than what most Politicians do by twisting a fact to their own benefit. Turnbull has just done the same with “Gang Violence” in Melbourne. They all do it, and the dumbos believe them.

Now Trippo, I hate conversing with you, as you are scum. but this

"Trumps method is to fight fundamentalism at the source and with a view to providing ownership of countries such as Iran and NK back to the people."

If it is the role of the POTUS to involve themselves in the democratisation other Nations such as Iran and North Korea, then what about most of Africa, some of South America, most of the Middle East, some of Asia, China, Russia and a host of other places that have dictators, despots and very not nice people running the show.

I agree. I think the fanatical Ayatollahs and the Revolutionary Guard have skewed perceptions. Iran has one of the more educated and technologically savvy populaces in the region which, as in 2009 and now, are showing hunger for more freedom. In American eyes all Iranians often get lumped with the Arab countries which creates its own biases.

Well that is four. It seems everyone thinks the same thing about that statement and yet somehow we managed to have a disagreement over our agreement. It’s like Christmas lunch all over again.

At Christmas lunch the only arguments was over who ate the last oysters. I did a great job on BBQ

The person weeing from their bum whilst projectile vomiting would be a reasonable indication of who ate the remaining oysters.

Guess you don’t like oysters !

I love oysters but require verification of origin, date of harvest and confirmation of correct shucking by way of my own eyes before consumption.

Well Diggs, in my case the oysters were from Coffin Bay, allegedly harvested and shucked the day before I picked them up from South Melbourne Market. Refrigerated at all times and then prepared and cooked to perfection, and eaten with relish. Well not all were cooked, I did eat a dozen raw as well, with an exquisite dipping sauce prepared by Mrs Fox. I did blow most of my Christmas food and drink budget on oysters and sparkling burgundy.

I bet Trump doesn’t eat oysters.

I think you are all just virtue shucking now.

Raw oysters? Mrs Fox would have been feeling particularly nervous in the subsequent few hours post consumption.
