Religions and their businesses like Sanitarium are tax exempt. The Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission (ACNC) regulates charities for the Australian and Victorian Governments. Allows tax deductable donations etc. The AFL, as mentioned in the book, is not covered by the ACNC.

I enjoyed listening to Peake. But he seemed to have a Dennis Denuto vibe about his professional career.

Well just listened to the Podcast, and definitely just the emotions going with some of the stuff about the saga.
But honestly is there any other professional sporting organisation in the world where the CEO gets paid 4 times that of the of its best player! That alone is simply staggering, and goes to show what a closed shop boys club it is where they are truly self serving.

Try US College Sports. There is currently contested legislation going through to give College athletes a slice of the pie.
IIRC there was some special Vic sports organisation set up with the Feds , enabling donations to the Hangar etc to be tax deductible.

I’m now convinced that no court action would ever get a conclusion to the Essendon saga. The tentacles of the AFL run too deep right through the media, judiciary, business and politics. The only way things would ever change would be public opinion.
This would be a great 3-5 part series with interviews hosted by someone who follows the AFL but is not connected.
The evidence is all in the public domain via the book and chip le grands book.

Half way through The Boys Club. Just read the chapter on how a certain club was looked after despite massive evidence they were druggies after by a cohort of business partners who happened to work in the AFL got together to sweep it under the carpet. And there’s the saga chapter following…where certain parties shaft us. And then shaft us again. And then for good measure shaft us again. Should be compulsory reading. Though it does get you angry all over again.
