New Board Member - Dorothy Hisgrove

Given that the position of Club Director is unpaid, what is in it for a supporter of another club to even want to join a club board.

  • Networking? Better off to join the Essendonians
  • High level corporate board experience? Well, its only a $60M turnover. Its a SME.

Somebody, somebody…?

It’s bad to create and foster a workplace environment that is inclusive and everyone is included and respected?

Its something that she is passionate about and will look great no her resume?

Also why is it a big deal that we have someone that supported another team on our board? If we are to be worried about spies and trojan horses why do we have a truckload (no pun intended) of coaches from other clubs?

OK, it will look good on her resume.
Her timing might be bad though, she should have waited to join a Board ticket for the pies EGM

The elected seats can be downsized to just 1 seat, Without violating the constitution?

How many elected board members were there 20-30 years ago?

It’s just tokenism. The remaining elected seats will just be a rotation of ex-players. There is no doubt about that.

Since when has Essendon not been inclusive?

i posted earlier in the thread that it’s 6 elected and 4 appointed as per the constitution.

that can only be changed with a special resolution at a general meeting.

It says “up to” though. Presumably they could run a four person board with zero elected if they want to.
Edit: I know absolutely nothing about corporate governance at all, so I’m more than happy to be told I’m an idiot.

theoretically, yeah. but a hell of a lot of things would need to go wrong to end up there, including losing the afl license.

All I was saying is that she has expertise and a passion for it, and with the bringing in of a women’s team in the next year or so it’s a good thing. And also our culture hasn’t been the greatest before this year so someone coming in that knows how to build positive cultures is worthwhile.

How do you know we are? Or that there isn’t room for improvement?

Just because on the surface we encourage all types of members and players and employees doesn’t mean we don’t have underlying/systemic issues. It’s a footy club and like most clubs they lag behind other work places when it comes to sexist, racist and homophobic attitudes.

I know we like to put the boot into the pies and Eddie for being racist, but just like the saga we had, it’s not just one club that needs to improve.

I couldn’t give a sh*t about what other clubs do.

But if our club were to be staring down the barrel of Private Ownership… I’d be ready to go to war over that, and I’d hope every other supporter would do the same.

It has torn clubs apart overseas. What could be worse than The 150 year culture and history of a club is sold to foreign business men.

I understand your perspective but was her appointment one of the one’s that gets appointed by the board anyway?

Would completely understand if your response to this was that no board member should be appointed and rather they should all be elected.

I think we actually have a fair bit of common ground on this one. If she helps us win a flag neither of us would really care who she is or how she got there.

i think the more importan question is, does appointed directors outnumber elected.

Brasher has been at the last couple of VFLW games at Windy Hill.

It would be helpful for the Club to clarify what an appointee brings to the Board in terms of skills, expertise and experience that is wanting in the current Board.

Is it your belief that all directors should be elected? It isn’t a bad idea but then it may become a popularity contest.

I think for a club where the members are effectively its owners, they should have a more than half share representation.

don’t care what the mixture is for big businesses, while the club continues to masquerade as a club it should be beholden to basic tenants.

Can’t remember but was Tanners seat due for re-election this AGM or next?

I actually think having someone who supports another club on the board is a good move. Too easy for a bunch of Essendon supporters to have preconceived assumptions about the club that possibly need to be given a shake every now and then. And not be following the rollercoaster of emotion when we win/lose.
