Our Academy atm isn’t producing.
i would have at least nominated one guy this year from Tiwi for Cat B.
gives us experience for future players coming in the NGA. And he might have turned out ok.
maybe the club thought they needed to fill the wellbeing officer first…
Are we providing them with the resources they need to help them make those changes/get them AFL ready?
All good questions for the SHISHA QnA no?
We could start by helping them fill out the draft nomination form, cant believe Simon didnt nominate.
However swans were able to draft Kieran Jack without nominating for the draft so it doesn’t always matter I guess if you have mates at AFL house.
that makes far too much sense.
I actually had some hope something like that was going to happen when I saw the add looking for a new welfare officer and read the job description. I thought, here we go, they are setting themselves up to support these lads coming to Melbourne. But I should have known better. EFC is all about the optics.
What does it all mean beni ?
Only draft-eligible club Academy players who were nominated by their club at the designated time and played in the National Championships are eligible to be pre-selected as a Category B rookie.
We need to do more in this area of Tiwi. Cousin Tippa and Cyril playing for Tiwi is great, and Melksham, Mosquito, Bellchambers all heading up there in the off season is good too, but we need more support on the ground to help develop these academy players.
Mind you if we rookie listed Adam Tippa, Id probably still be happy.
just need to start the Tiwi production line
Just more of the same, we are interested in empowering indigenous people, supporting them, and offering any help we can. Except when it comes to list spots
I wonder how the VFL changes have impacted our decision making regarding offering AFL spots to Tiwi kids. Very possible that the club would prefer to ‘hand-out’ VFL Cat B positions on ‘speculative’ talent.
The greatest thing the club could do to aid Tiwi football would be increasing education/health programs. tTere is a reason why Tiwi prospects struggle to develop the required fitness levels and physique and it is primarily an issue of access and engagement to the required resources.
It will be interesting to see how this new generation of Tiwi footballers develop as they are the ones who will have been given more formal and hands on training and guidance. The guys who are 20yo+ clearly have oodles of ability and talent but have likely never had access to much consistent mentor-ship from health and fitness professionals.
Ironically, for a club that is all about optics, the view is pretty murky.
this is the thing, im sure the thought process is we need to take a cautious approach to bringing down lads from the Tiwi, maybe step them through the reserves for a year, then look at listing after that.
I truely think this is probably the rationale.
What I dont understand though, is why other clubs will happily select kids from similar backgrounds. Its not like Cyril who had the exact same grounding coming into the AFL as some of the kids that are CAT B eligible was needing this slowly, slowly approach.
Either your system can do it, or it can’t.
I was of the firm belief that Tippa just needed to be a full time footballer and his fitness would come good. People forget in the years he was on our VFL list he was working 2 jobs and spending half his week down in Gippy. Doesn’t leave a lot of time to work on your tank.
As a person who has spent a decent part of their professional life working with Indigenous kids from remote areas. The worst thing you can do is sell them short. You dont need to convince a kid to work harder. You only need to convince them there is a legitimate opportunity and you believe in them.
I just feel (and im honest, Im not a fly on the wall at the EFC, I dont know the exact details of what we are doing) like we arnt really sending that message just yet. Sure we send people up there to check in. But the real penny will drop for the rest of the Island when a Puruntatameri or Munkara gets a shot on the CAT B, then the rest of the Island will buy in. I have no doubt.
Lachlan Johnson
How were Brisbane able to nominate him as a F/S I thought he was a part of the JHA?
We probably declined to select him based off his acl injury
If that’s the case you hope the club made the right decision other wise we will look pretty stupid if he becomes a gun for Brissy
More a question of how we had any claim on him when his old man played a squillion games for Brisbane.
Was part of our zone I assume?
he was eligible for both (brisbane father son).
I thought Brisbane might pass on him because of acl. And he would get to recuperate at home with his family if went to us under NGA.
We could get him cheaply as a cat B rookie…but now Brisbane essentially will get him as a Category A rookie, assuming no one bids on him at the draft.
He could have told Brisbane not to bother …like Marc Murphy did, but maybe he had no gaurantee of getting selected from EFC…Maybe he wanted to play for his Dad’s club like Josh schache.
Brisbane were able to nominate him as a f/s, because he’s a f/s… it’s pretty straightforward.
Players can be f/s at multiple clubs and they can be in an academy too if eligible. They can pick where they go if multiple want him (i.e Blakey), or they can decline and go in the draft also if they prefer (i.e Murphy).
I wouldn’t worry. He’s not very good by all reports.
Do Port have an academy? if so we can then nominate him as a F/S
