I’m yet to have a conversation at work relating to talking with policy makers without one of the working group heads mentioning Yes, Minister.
I’ve been meaning to give it a watch.

Oh, and the “Young Ones”.
My super hot take is that The Sopranos is actually a dark comedy sitcom masquerading as a serious gangster series. Some of the comedic timing, interaction amongst thebcharactera and utterly hilarious one liners get more of a laugh out of me than many comedy sitcoms.
it’s easy. comedy plays with the edges of societal norms and values. and they change over time so the edges that were played with are either now taboo or taken for granted. so it’s not about whether the jokes are offensive or whatever, it’s just they don’t land anymore and aren’t funny
case in point: quite a few plot points in friends are “oh no people think i’m gay” because not many people lived “out” in the 90s. now it’s a lot more prevalent so now those jokes come off as “why would that be a bad thing to happen to you?”
Yeah I remember finding a box set that included early episodes that totally had never been shown here imo
Yes Minister/PM still stands up today with its excellent script and acting, but The Young Ones has dated horribly (as outstanding as it was when it first came out).
“That’s not Nigella. That’s not even Ainsley, mate”
160 posts and one Monty Python shoutout
disappointed
More of a skit show, than a sitcom?
the scripts themselves weren’t that funny. the jokes were aided by the cast all being extremely charismatic
I don’t think it’s overrated or underrated.
It’s probably had the most significant impact on pop culture (heck, even science!) of any TV show/movie ever made.
think it falls well under the category of ‘science of comedy’
Fair take.
If it’s still funny when you tune out the canned laughter, it’s a good start.
This would be correct.
If people weren’t always talking about those old comedies and referencing them in every day life. So do those people no longer find those comedies funny??
If the jokes ‘don’t land anymore’, why do people still love them??
Why can you show younger people those older comedies, and they enjoy them??
Inbetweeners needs a mention
Massively and criminally underrated: Toast of London
Holy Grail. Brilliant.
Life of Brian. Excellent.
Meaning of Life. Dreadful.
The skit shows swung wildly from legendary to boring within each episode. The premise of “World Championship Hide and Seek” is still one of the greatest comedy ideas I’ve seen, lol.
As a collective, perhaps because they were so eclectic and hit and miss, they changed the game.
I recently watched the inbetweeners again for the first time in 10 years. When I watched it the first time it was hilarious because of how relatable it was, when I watched it the second time I was in a constant state of cringe because of how relatable it was.
That’s a big tick in my book.
YES I CAN HEAR YOU CLEM FANDANGO, YOU &%)#%^#&%^
They weren’t afraid to take a risk. That’s for sure.
