Having said all That, Ross is an absolute jerk.
Way more in retrospect than at the time.

Actually, they treat his (first) ex-wife’s relationship pretty respectfully and well.

fk i could go on about comedy for hours

there’s a video of stephen fry at a lecture talking about the difference between uk and us comedy which boils down to in the old pie-in-the-face gag, americans would rather throw it and british would rather get hit

it’s a lot to do with the breeding grounds for performances. in america, it’s mostly improv skits and “tight 5s” (5min set). so it’s quite competitive in a way to get your sht before others get to. and the peak comedy career there is a series of netflix specials, or being an snl or tonight show writer.

in the uk, there’s a lot of pantomime/theatre along with traditional stand up, plus panel shows, radio shows, festival performances, etc etc so the comedy lives or dies in the audience enjoying whatever is presented. watch shows like qi and would i lie to you and there’s a lot of “keep the balloon in the air” - setting up punchlines for others, adding on extra lines, so and so forth. if everyone is laughing, we all look good

australia is a weird hybrid of the two. the only viable ongoing lucrative career here for a comedian is breakfast radio and the only large enough platform to get scouted is the melbourne comedy festival. so comedy here is all about long form scripted 60min show. so those that tend to make it out of that are good writers, but not necessarily good performers. and in content heavy environments where they don’t have months of prep time, they get shown to be not actually that funny but get by on charisma.

It’s the weakest of those Rob Sitch etc comedies. The current series anyway. They speak too quickly, as if it’s a competition to get the lines out in as short a time as possible.

You’ve understandably forgotten (or not seen) Pacific Heat and Funky Squad from Working Dog, although Sitch doesn’t appear to have been involved in the latter.

Good call. Totally forgot that one. Ran out of steam but was watchable.

The best Rob Sitch series isn’t even a comedy - A River Somewhere.

Love that show.

I guess I’m with Sal. Whatever they were doing I was just at right angles too.

following on from my earlier post, here’s something you’ll never not notice now that i’ve pointed it out

there’s almost no visual punchlines in american sitcoms. every joke has to end with a dumb line like “well that just happened”

99.99% of punchlines in american shows are a scripted line read by an actor. because they have teams of writers that pump out a script and fob it off to get filmed before working on the next one, so all jokes have to be on the page

british sitcoms will have most punchlines scripted, but are often only one or two writers who are also actors/directors/producers. so they’re confident enough to have punchline of the scene just be “nigel’s bed is on fire” or “jez pulls a face” or “malcolm tucker runs off down the hallway” or “manuel drops a tray” and let the stage crew, actors, cameras, directors and editors do the rest.

Not trying to start an argument, but there’s probably more physical comedy in the US Office than the UK one.
Maybe an exception.

I always feel like Australian comedy has to remind people it’s Australian. Something something Vegemite (Insert laugh here).

Deadloch underrated. Looking forward to series 2. Rosehaven with Crime.

Wolf like me.

Has me convinced the future of Australian comedy is in tassie and Adelaide
